2015’s Most Anticipated Movies

Christmas is over, we’ve all eaten more leftover turkey sandwiches than you can shake a stick at, and the year is drawing to a close. That means it’s time for two things; writing thank you letters to your relatives for the lovely presents (even if your granny gave you socks again, and not the cheap TV you really wished for!), and looking forward to the year to come. 2015 promises to be a great year for moviegoers, and these are just some of the titles we’re looking forward to…

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Whilst the Guardians of the Galaxy now offer strong rivals for the title of “World’s Favourite Superhero Team”, there’s no doubt that the second cinematic outing of The Avengers will be just as exciting and climactic as the first. Although they won’t have the backing of S.H.I.E.L.D. this time around, you’ll still see many familiar faces from the first film and the other Marvel superhero films. The film is due for release on the 24th April in the UK.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Opinion of the new Star Wars trilogy is already divided – and the first one doesn’t come out until near the end of next year. The 88 second long teaser trailer prompted widespread debate about the skin colour of a storm trooper (weren’t they all supposed to be clones?) and the practicality or otherwise of a lightsaber with a cross guard, with reactions ranging from “this is the best day of my life” to “they’re ruining Star Wars forever”. Whatever happens, it’s obvious that this is going to be one of the most talked-about movies of the year! The film is due for release on the 18th December in the UK.

Minions

The lovable yellow minions were the stand-out stars of the 2010 film Despicable Me and its 2013 sequel, and this year they get their own title. We’re looking forward to more banana-based antics and hopefully more Minion-style musical numbers, as the film follows Kevin, Stuart and Bob on their quest for a new villain to serve. Although originally scheduled for December 2014, the film was promoted to summer and is now due for release on the 26th June in the UK.

Jurassic World

After being lost in development hell for over a decade, the fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise will finally make its way to our screens next year, and it looks like the people in charge haven’t learned any lessons. We’re not sure whether the trailer actually means that Chris Pratt will ride around on a motorbike with a crack team of trained velociraptors – but we kind of hope so! The film is due for release in the UK on the 12th of June.

Mad Max: Fury Road

The original Mad Max film was made way back in 1979, and like Jurassic World, the fourth instalment of the franchise got lost in development hell – this time for twenty five years. Although Mel Gibson lost interest in the film somewhere around the year 2000, Tom Hardy is a more than adequate replacement. From the trailer, it seems we can expect more of the crazy post-apocalyptic aesthetic that characterised the original trilogy, with a bigger budget and up-to-date effects offering some truly epic action. The film is due for a UK release on the 15th May.

The Hateful Eight

Although filming only began a few weeks ago, some sources say that Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film will hit cinema screens in 2015. Set in Wyoming shortly after the American Civil War, eight travellers take shelter from a blizzard in a mountain pass, and it soon starts to look like they won’t make it to their destination. Tarantino threatened to pull production after a script leak, but with an all star cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen and two new drafts of the script with different endings, it is now going ahead.

Although these are just a few of the titles to look forward to, you’ll no doubt have noticed that it’s a list heavy with sequels and spinoffs.
