2016 Oscar Nominations Announced – Could It Be Leo’s Year?

The nominations for the 88th Academy Awards – better known as the Oscars – have just been announced, beginning the build-up to the big day on the 28th February.

One of the biggest topics of conversation is: could it finally be Leonardo di Caprio’s year? The actor has been nominated for Best Actor three times in the past – for The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Wolf of Wall Street, as well as a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape – but he’s never won.

Best Actor

Well, it could be his year – he does indeed have a nomination for his part in The Revenant, based on the true story of frontiersman Hugh Glass- but he’s got some stiff competition.

Eddie Redmayne, who took the award last year for his portrayal of scientist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, is nominated again for The Danish Girl, in which he portrays transgender pioneer Lili Elbe, whilst Michael Fassbender is up for his titular role in Steven Jobs and Bryan Cranston for his titular role in Trumbo. In fact, the only nominee who wasn’t portraying a real-life person is Matt Damon, for his role in The Martian!

Best Actress

Red-carpet darling Jennifer Lawrence is in the running for her role in Joy, but a lot of the Oscar buzz this year is about rising star Brie Larson, who is nominated for her role in Room. Cate Blanchett’s title role in Carol also earned her a nomination, and Saoirse Ronan is nominated for Brooklyn. The shortlist is completed by Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years.

Best Picture

The power of the leads is just one factor bringing The Revenant, The Martian, Room and Brooklyn into the shortlist for the Best Picture award; this is also one of ten categories where Mad Max: Fury Road has a nomination. Rounding off the category, we have The Big Short, Bridge of Spies and Spotlight – again, three films based on real events. What is it with all the biographies and historical films this year?!

The Biggest Films

Whilst Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have been one of the most talked-about films, its five nominations – in categories for visual effects, sound and score – are overshadowed by the big hitters of the year. The Revenant takes 12 nominations, with Mad Max: Fury Road only tailing it slightly at 10. This could make it a great year for Tom Hardy, who not only starred as Mad Max but also gained a Best Supporting Actor nomination for The Revenant.
