3 Spin-Offs That Were Way Better Than the Original

Earlier this month, the long-anticipated spin-off to the highest-rated TV-show, Better Call Saul was released. The bar is always set a little higher for spin-offs, but fans of Breaking Bad will be judging the new spin-off even harder than most. Some critics are already saying that Better Call Saul is even better than Breaking Bad. We’re yet to decide if anything tops the brilliant original series, but it got us thinking about spin-offs that ended up being better than the original. It turns out that there are more of these than you’d think, and in this blog post we’ll be looking at 3 of those. Starting with…

1. The Simpsons (from The Tracey Ullman Show)

It’s hard to believe that a show as good as The Simpsons was once limited to 30-second clips that bookended ad breaks. The show had a humble beginning on the variety show The Tracy Ullman Show, but this proved to be too small a stage for the dysfunctional American family and in December 1989 their own show was created by Matt Groening. The show is now in its 26th season and is undoubtedly more successful than the original. Most people have only even heard of The Tracey Ullman Show because of its relation to The Simpsons.

2. Frasier (from Cheers)

Cheers was one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, running for a solid 11 years before the producers called time on the show. One of the show’s supporting characters, Dr. Frasier Crane, was so well-liked by viewers that in 1993 his very own show, Frasier was launched. It’s hard to compare Frasier and Cheers because the two are so different, Frasier being more of a highbrow comedy whereas Cheers was more of a standard American sitcom. However, Frasier was so well received by a more recent generation that it has made its way onto our list. The show lasted as long as Cheers and the last episode was first broadcast on 13th May, 2004.

3. Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

To all the hardcore Buffy fans out there, hear me out before you start lighting your torches and picking up your pitchforks. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a brilliant show, but after the first few seasons the producers had milked the Angel/Buffy relationship to the point where people couldn’t care less about the vampire killer/vampire couple. The characters by themselves were still interesting though, and when the producers launched a spin-off show Angel, both became far more interesting. So, although I’m not explicitly saying that Angel is better than Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the spin-off was good for both shows and it deserves a place on this list.
