Over the years, TVs have undergone huge changes to their structures, changes which have given televisions new and greater capabilities to show us entertainment like never before. In this post, we will talk about some key inventions that have changed the way we watch TV, including smart capabilities, high-def image, 3D experience, curved screens and streaming, just to mention a few.
Pixels
One of the greatest inventions that completely revolutionised modern television was the invention of the pixel. Before the pixel, televisions relied on cathode-ray tubes to produce their images. This was an electron beam that ‘loaded’ the image onto the screen bit by bit, which limited how many areas of different colours could be used on a screen, thereby offering low-quality images with quite noticeable gaps between the illuminated zones.
CRTs also arranged their image production in horizontal lines, which created pictures which had the effect of looking through a set of window blinds, with recurring dim lines evenly spaced out across the television image. Pixels revolutionised picture quality by structuring the illuminated zones in both vertical and horizontal lines to minimise the viewers’ ability to distinguish dim areas on their television.
Since the introduction of the first pixels, scientists have been working hard to make this technology smaller and smaller, leading to the invention of micro LEDs and inorganic LEDs which have enabled television image quality to reach greater heights. It is thought that the introduction of 8K televisions, where pixels are smaller and smarter than ever before, can provide images where the individual pixels are indistinguishable to the human eye, even at close distances.
Until 8K televisions are readily available to the public, we will continue to provide great cheap 4K TV deals on which you can enjoy the culmination of decades of TV inventions.
Smart TVs
Smart TVs are the height of luxury – after years of dragging the laptop around the house and faffing about with umpteen cables just to stream an episode from iPlayer on the big TV, the Smart TV revolution offers a much more relaxing experience. We won’t be taking the ability to sit down and immediately connect the TV to our favourite apps like iPlayer, Netflix, YouTube or Prime for granted anytime soon, and neither will you when you pick up a new TV from our section on cheap smart TVs.
Streaming Services
The rise of streaming has changed the way that many people watch TV. Freed from the rigidity of a television network’s schedule, streaming has enabled people to enjoy their television without missing a single minute. What people rarely appreciate is the level of innovation that was needed to make the leap from ubiquitous cable TV to enable people to enjoy streaming services. Television streaming requires a lot of data to be transferred over the internet, so while the rise of streaming is something to celebrate for the innovations that make TV what it is today, it’s also a massive victory for the history of the internet, too.
HDTV
HDTV, HDR, or High Definition Range Television are terms given to televisions with an incredible number of pixels. Here’s a small guide to the differences between HD, UHD and HDR:
HD – High Definition – A television with 1080p resolution.
UHD – Ultra High Definition – A 4K TV with a resolution of 3840p.
HDR – High Dynamic Range – A TV with a higher colour gamut, meaning it can create images with a greater contrast of colour. It’s the predecessor to OLED and QLED technologies.
HDTV and all its similar-sounding offshoots are all about celebrating further developments of pixels into the structure of the television. You can read more about 4K HDR on our blog.
OLED and QLEDs
The science of QLED and OLED TVs can be quite confusing and technical, but at the end of the day, all you really need to understand is that the quality of colour available on our televisions is reaching greater heights than we ever thought possible.
OLED TVs use organic LEDs to provide rich, long-lasting colours. QLED TVs offer the same result using quantum-dot technology. We regularly offer both types of television in our store and you can peruse our current selection of cheap OLED TVs online.
3D TV
3D TVs might have been a passing trend, but they’re still quite popular with families and remain a monument to the creativity and innovation of TV inventors. We offer cheap 3D TVs so you can bring this phenomenon home.
Curved TVs
We’ve previously written on the benefits of a curved TV, as well as how you might measure a curved TV, and we think that they’re a fantastic invention that changed the way we think about the TV. Previously, television screens were flat, but the curved TV screen opened up new opportunities. Since the curved TV, we’ve seen the release of modular screens, and even a rollable one produced by LG.
If you’re ready to escape your flat screen and appreciate the TV that changed the shape of our entertainment, you should browse our sales on cheap curved TVs.
These seven achievements are just the beginning; we know that the future of the television is vast, simply based on the plethora of innovations seen in 2019’s TV technology advancements. We look forward to carrying on providing you with the latest televisions at great prices.
Where will television take you next?
