The Great British Love of Television

A recent Freeview poll covering 2,000 British adults has produced results that suggest 9 of every 10 Britons have strong feelings with regard to widespread access to main TV channels. Part of the survey required each individual to state what they would be hypothetically willing to give up in order to retain free access to the main broadcasting channels.  The research has discovered that 1 out of every 25 British adults would forgo the right to vote if it meant that television remained free of charge. Freeview TV also outscored unrestricted travel on motorways, non-emergency healthcare, museum access, a large part of university education and also home broadband.  When asked to rate the scale of a selection of British organisations on a scale of 1 to 10, the surveyed Britons gave Freeview a score of 6.93. This figure places it below the NHS, which topped the poll, but above both the House of Commons and the Church of England.

Free TV has obviously become a highly valued part of British culture, so valued in fact that some people in continue to risk watching television without holding a TV Licence. Only last month, more than £250,000 worth of fines were suggested by TV Licensing officers who visited the island of Guernsey. The £2000 pound fines could impact as many as 130 residents who have been caught watching TV illegally. The enforcing of these fines is the responsibility of the Guernsey Police, who have yet to come to a decision about the situation. Guernsey is exempt from many UK taxes due to its status as a possession of the British Crown, and many believe that the incident needs to be carefully handled to avoid setting a future precedent. In Greater Manchester, as many as 20 people a day come before the courts accused of TV license dodging, with more than 7,000 people prosecuted in just the last year. Clearly, many Britons are prepared to take considerable risks when it comes to retaining access to a TV.

With so many Britons placing such a large emphasis upon the role that television plays within their daily lives, it’s no wonder that there have never been so many options when it comes to choosing a TV as there are at present.  At Electronic World we specialise in providing a full variety of discount graded televisions, from cheap LED TVs to plasma televisions, so you can browse through all of the models available to you with maximum convenience.
