When we think of UK television, we look to the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV as our main broadcasters; whilst some of the most watched channels are in the Sky network. However, UKTV is now becoming one to watch not only for repeats, but increasingly for original content. As Tony Jordan, creator of the BBC’s Life on Mars, signs a deal to air the ‘passion project’ of his career exclusively on UKTV channels, we take a look at the changing climate of UK television and see how you can take full advantage of it.
UKTV will be showing the much-anticipated supernatural drama, Legion, exclusively as they were the first to agree to make the show. According to Jordan, “the concept of Legion is that in order to save his daughter’s life a man sells his soul to the devil”. With such a deep theme and an impressive production budget, the hope is that the ten-part series will garner audience loyalty akin to that expressed by viewers of Dexter, Breaking Bad or Hustle; also written by Jordan.
As a broadcaster, UKTV has gone from strength to strength with ten incredibly popular channels including Dave, Yesterday, Gold, Good Food and Eden, amongst others. Dave alone gets 26 million viewers a month, with their comforting and entertaining mix of interesting programmes that appeal to students, indie kids and dads countrywide. Somehow their marketing to men does not offend the legions of female fans either. Being the go-to channels for repeats of your favourite programmes, UKTV has been massively successful, and that is now financing these commissions of original series.
UK broadcasters certainly understand the British compulsion to stay in and snuggle up once the weather turns a bit colder. There are a lot of fantastic programmes starting this autumn, including the one-off fiftieth anniversary episode of Doctor Who, drama The 7.39, The Fried Chicken Shop fly-on-the-wall documentary and, of course, The X Factor which is already dominating our Saturday nights. To get the most out of these and several other programmes, why not look at the great range of televisions we have in stock, including great plasma HDTVs and 3D televisions. With so many great dramas coming to our screens, and production budgets far exceeding those we’ve seen before, it pays to have a screen allowing you to enjoy this increase in quality. Get the right TV for your living room, put the kettle on and let’s enjoy the autumn programming together.
