The 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards were held on Sunday 22nd September, and a host of stars swept up the red carpet in Los Angeles to celebrate the very best in television.
There were plenty of British hopes within the nominations. Benedict Cumberbatch’s role as Christopher Tietjens in Parade’s End gained him a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, while Michelle Dockery was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama as a result of her role in Downton Abbey – one of twelve categories in which the period drama had a chance.
On the night however, British talent largely went unrewarded. Michael Douglas beat Benedict Cumberbatch to the Lead Actor award, for his role as Liberace in the biopic Beyond the Candelabra, while Claire Danes’ role in Homeland took her ahead of Michelle Dockery.
Downton Abbey, whilst a hugely popular show on both sides of the Atlantic, took home only one award for Outstanding Music Composition, which it won for the second year running. The ITV show has just returned for its fourth series, with an average of 9.5 million viewers tuning in to see Dockery’s Lady Mary grieving over the loss of her husband Matthew.
Breaking Bad, the American series which is approaching its series finale this weekend, was also disappointed in several categories, but it did take the award that mattered most – namely the award for Outstanding Drama Series.
One possible hint at a changing future for television was the fact that Netflix gained a total of fourteen nominations for web-only series Arrested Development, Hemlock Grove and House of Cards. This is the first time that nominations have been allowed for original online programming, and Netflix were rewarded with three wins, including the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series; awarded to the pilot episode of House of Cards.
