When most people set out to buy a new TV, they inevitably come back from the shop with either an LCD, LED or plasma television. These three types are currently the main models of TV available in most stores after all, but what exactly is the difference between each of these systems? Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, and all are therefore well worthy of consideration.
LCD
LCD televisions use light from behind their screens to illuminate a matrix of tiny crystals. Each of these cells allows colour to build up within the picture in a controlled manner, thereby forming an image. LCD televisions are powered using older technology than the newer LED screens, but that simply gives them a niche all of their own. If you’re looking for a budget friendly cheap TV, an LCD machine will suit you perfectly.
LED
LED televisions are very similar to LCD style TVs, but use light emitting diodes for their light source instead. LCD screens generally use only a few lamps as a backlight, but LED machines use huge numbers of tiny LEDs to achieve the same effect. However, the small size of each individual light source allows an LED TV to be very slim, and they’re also energy efficient to run as well. Qualities like sound and picture vary greatly between LED television brands, but for modern efficiency you can’t really go wrong.
Plasma
Plasma televisions have a dual reputation for being less energy efficient when compared to an LED TV, but offset this by being greatly beloved by film enthusiasts. A plasma display contains many miniscule gas cells between twin glass sheets, and each cell emits a red, green or blue light onto the screen to construct a picture. Plasma TVs are famous for their ability to display very deep blacks and superbly natural colours, so they are a good choice if you’re aiming for a ‘home cinema’ experience.
