My Cart - Last week, Panasonic announced an exciting new collaboration with Freesat to bring the Freetime on-demand service to their VIERA smart TVs. The Freetime browsing service was previously only available though Humax set top boxes, but after a six-year collaboration they have now been built into the flatscreens and are available through both satellite and terrestrial television services.
Freetime is an innovative new viewing experience built into the TV which gives you access to over 200 TV and radio stations; 11 of which are in high definition. Using the on-demand service you can scroll back through all TV programs from the past 7 days to catch up on shows you missed. Shows can be accessed through BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD and Demand 5. Additionally, the showcase feature gives you top picks and program suggestions based upon what you already watch, and even includes suggestions for upcoming programs.
Panasonic is the first television manufacturer to integrate a Freesat into a flatscreen television without the need for a separate box top. This seamless integration makes it stand apart from the You-View services which were created to standardise internet-connected television services. Freesat have worked in collaboration with Panasonic since their launch in 2007 to create this service, and it is believed that other manufacturers will adopt this feature in the future.
Freetime is made up of a combination of Freetime open DVB, HbbTV, OIPF and W3C HTML5 standards. The service adds links to the online offerings of public service broadcasters by delivering on-demand content through broadband; all whilst simultaneously offering live broadcasting through either satellite or aerial connections. Freesat’s managing director, Emma Scott, said of the collaboration with Panasonic: “This is a fantastic acknowledgement of a great British media technology success story, and this deal opens up exciting new territories for us.”
