In an exciting development relating to the uses of Sony PlayStations, Sony has announced that they are planning to film a TV drama series that will be available to stream exclusively through the Playstation. In January the technology giant announced that they are developing a cloud based TV service which will be available through the games console. According to reports though, the series “Powers” will be available to stream simply through the PS4; just like Netflix or Hulu services.
The series of “Powers” will be an adaptation of the graphic novel by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming. It is a genre mash-up between action, fantasy and sci-fi; genres which will certainly appeal to gamers. The original series will follow the adventures of two detectives who investigate crimes by people with supernatural powers. This exciting series will be produced by an offshoot of Sony, Sony Pictures TV, who have gained a strong reputation by producing shows such as Breaking Bad, Masters of Sex, and Hannibal.
PlayStation is typically associated with computer games and online interactive games, but in the last year Sony have shown strong interest in diversifying the uses of the console by adding television facilities. The CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House, said in July 2013: “With 110 million PlayStation Network accounts worldwide, that’s a substantial business opportunity for Sony Pictures to reach a different audience. Work is already underway to develop original TV-style programming content, which could be made available with some form of exclusivity to people on the PlayStation Network.”
Although the creation of the “Powers” TV series has been confirmed, no exact release dates have been mentioned, and it is also unclear when Sony will be launching their cloud TV service. Sony’s competitor Microsoft is also looking at creating TV shows to stream through their new Xbox One, and they have already signed an agreement with Steven Spielberg to create a series based on the Halo Xbox games.
