The future of entertainment is a ‘surrounding ’ one

The world of home entertainment really seems to be getting into its developmental stride in recent years and the last decade has seen a flurry of development. Colour television became popular in the mid 1960’s and for over forty years the way in which people watched TV at home changed very little. It wasn’t until the early 2000’s that cheap LCD TVs made high definition an easy and relatively inexpensive option for homes; now most homes have an HD TV and enjoy their entertainment in this way.

Over the years since HD became an option the TV and entertainment industry have used and developed it incredibly effectively. A question that is raised after each new evolutionary development is ‘What is the next Revolutionary product?’ and several developments have become apparent recently that seem to have the answer;

Surround sound

Surround sound has been around in many forms for over half a century but recent developments by a company named Auro Technologies have produced what they claim is the most immersive surround sound system available. The system utilises the latest speaker and processor technologies to completely surround you with the layers of sound in detail and crispness heretofore unheard of. Whilst this technology is at the development phase at the moment it surely is only a matter of time until it is readily available for the average consumer.

Interactive gaming headsets

Invented in 2012, Oculus Rift is a headset that maps head movements and translates them into movements inside a gaming environment. As we mentioned in an earlier blog Google has now developed a similar headset and Oculus Rift itself has been purchased by Facebook. This huge investment in the technology shows that it really is the future and that it won’t be long at all until both of these technologies are battling it out for space on our game shelf at home. The question that many are asking is whether this technology could be applied to films and TV programmes to make it feel as though you were actually part of the action?

Bendable TVs

Samsung recently showed off their bendable TV that could bend to wrap around the viewer and give a truly immersive experience. The feeling of having the action happening all around you promises to be hugely exciting and intense. Although there is still no official release date of this bendable TV technology, as with all technology it is only a matter of time before we see it on the shelves and in our own homes.

With all of these developments in the pipeline it seems that within the next decade the way in which we watch TV and indeed the entire viewing experience will be completely revolutionised. Whether you are taking in the latest blockbuster or playing your favourite console game the experience will be one that wraps itself around you in all ways.
