To finish off the 4-part blog series of looking at great shows throughout the decades, we will look at the hugely popular and critically acclaimed Modern Family.
Modern Family is extremely ambitious for a sit-com because it has an ensemble cast. It revolves around three families living in the Los Angeles area who are interrelated through Jay Prichett and his children, Claire and Mitchell. Each family is different and faces its trials and tribulations in their own unique way.
When the series first premiered, it was watched by a staggering 12.6 million viewers. It continues to impress and is going strong in its 5th season. It’s easy to see why Modern Family has an incredible following: it doesn’t try to be hip nor does it go for the lowest common denominator with cheap laughs. It is old fashioned yet open minded, popular but funny. It tackles issues of race, sexuality and transgenerational disappointment, without over stepping the mark or becoming overly sentimental. To put it simply: this is an excellent family sitcom.
The writing of modern family is top notch, intelligent and on some occasions downright hilarious. As it is filmed as a documentary, we get a voyeuristic glimpse into the life of three modern American families. The characters and their relationships develop so convincingly, it often feels too true to life to be fiction.
Phil Dunphy
What puts the icing on the cake for Modern Family is the character Phil (played by Ty Burrell). He is a 47 year old who sees himself as a ‘cool dad’. He goes to extremes to bond with his children, which includes learning the dances to songs from High School Musical. He comes across as goofy and doesn’t really plan things through, often having to lie to his wife to avoid getting in trouble. Of course, she always finds out about his gaffes, it wouldn’t be a sit-com if she didn’t.
Here at Electronic World we have collected some of our favourite Phil quotes:
On Cheerleading
‘Cheerleading in my college was cool. The football players were so jealous they wouldn’t even let me and my buddies, Trevor, Scotty and Ling go to their parties.’
On the iPad
‘The iPad comes out on my actual birthday. It’s like Steve Jobs and God got together to say, “We love you, Phil.’’
On Being Ganged up on
‘Yeah, I made a mistake today, but only because the three of you ganged up on me, like when the Wolfman, Dracula and Frankenstein showed up in the same movie, only this wasn’t awesome!’
