If you are thinking of upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray by purchasing a Blu-ray player you will need a HD ready television and there are many cheap plasma TVs and LCD TVs available.
Blu-ray (not Blue-ray) is the name of the next generation of optical disc format. The name Blu-ray derives from the fact that a blue-violet laser is used to read the disc rather than the traditional red laser used in DVD players and recorders. This blue-violet laser uses a much shorter wavelength which allows for much more storage space on a single disc of up to 100 GB, whilst still maintaining the same disc size as a traditional DVD or CD. This far greater storage space allows for recordings of high definition movies and games to be recorded on a single disc.
If you are a bit of a movie buff then you have to consider pairing a Blu-ray player with a cheap plasma TV as you will not believe the standard of the picture quality compared to standard DVD. You will be able to watch movies in high definition with far greater picture detail, more vivid colours and improved sound, especially when paired with a multi speaker home cinema system. There are always great deals available on new TVs, including cheap Samsung TVs, so make sure you shop around.
Blu-ray recorders are also now coming onto the market which means that if you want to record films and programmes from the many high definition television channels that are now available you will be able to whilst still maintaining the high definition picture quality
