TV awards are always one of the highlights of any year, and shortly we can expect the winners of both the TV Choice and the Emmy Awards to be announced. There’s certainly no shortage of talent out there, and that’s undoubtedly the problem; splitting hairs between the strength of each nominee is going to be almost impossible!
There are plenty of stories to discuss in the build-up, but here are a few of the key battlegrounds that have caught our eye:
The 18th Annual TV Choice Awards – Announced Monday September 8th
Best Actor:
Benedict Cumberbatch and David Tennant are two of the most popular actors of the modern generation, and the Sherlock star and the former Doctor Who have received rave reviews for almost every piece of work they have touched in recent years. Cumberbatch’s nomination has inevitably come about as a result of his portrayal of the eponymous lead in Sherlock, whilst Tennant has been shortlisted for The Escape Artist. Joined by Allen Leech and Bradley Walsh, the competition in this category should be fierce.
Best Actress:
Downton Abbey has been a fixture within almost all TV awards ever since it first hit our screens, and sure enough Joanne Froggatt is flying the flag for ITV’s period drama this year too. Her performance as Anna Bates in the most recent series was particularly powerful, but Judy Parfitt – from the astonishingly popular Call the Midwife series – is a worthy challenger for Froggatt. These two are probably the forerunners in their category, although it would be unwise to discount Waterloo Road’s Laurie Brett or Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire.
Best Drama/New Drama:
These two categories bring together the best of old and new TV drama, with the former category bringing together old stalwarts Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey, Sherlock and Waterloo Road, and the latter ushering in some superb newcomers like Happy Valley, The Crimson Field, The Widower and the BBC’s light hearted reinterpretation of The Musketeers.
With still more than a month to go before the final results are announced, there is plenty of time for the build-up to continue. To view the full list of nominations for every category, have a look at this summary on The Independent.
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards – Announced Monday August 25th
There’s almost too much going on at the Emmy Awards to break down into a short summary, and you can view the full shortlist by visiting The Telegraph website. That being said, there are a few categories that definitely look like producing some fireworks:
Game of Thrones, True Detective, Breaking Bad and Man Men are the stand-out nominees for the Outstanding Drama Series. Breaking Bad was honoured last year, so some are thinking that – on the back of a best-ever season – this might be the year for Game of Thrones to take the crown. Don’t rule out perennial favourite Downton Abbey or House of Cards though!
Matthew McConaughey is coming into the Emmy Awards fresh from triumphing at the Oscars, so you wouldn’t be surprised to see him walk away with the Emmy for his starring role in True Detective. There’s plenty of other strong contenders for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but expect McConaughey’s current star power to carry him through.
Clare Danes has dominated the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category in the last couple of years, so this year we can’t help wondering if the Homeland star might have to settle for seeing someone else take the prize. We wouldn’t like to go out on a limb and say who, so don’t push us too hard!
Most people are saying that the winner of Outstanding Miniseries simply must be Fargo this year. Can anyone upset this seemingly firm favourite? Well, that’s why we’ll all be tuning in.
