Last night saw the 18th TV Choice Awards hosted by comedian David Mitchell pay homage to legendary soap EastEnders and American import Game of Thrones. The award show, sponsored by TV Choice Magazine celebrates the best of British TV, with shows like Gordon Ramsay’s Home Cooking and The Jeremy Kyle Show netting awards for Best Food Show and Best Daytime Show respectively.
The BBC series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, scooped the Best Drama award. Meanwhile, Game of Thrones was announced as the Best International Show, fending off competition from US comedies The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family, and Fox’s zombie drama The Walking Dead. Former Coronation Street star, Sarah Lancashire also took home an award for her role in Happy Valley – a new drama about a Yorkshire police sergeant on the trail of the kidnappers who raped her daughter.
Dynamic duo Ant and Dec garnered three TV Choice awards: not only did Britain’s Got Talent, which they host, snatch Best Talent Show, their Saturday Night Takeaway won Best Entertainment Show, and Best Reality Show went to I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. The well-loved Geordie presenters also won the Gold Award which recognises special contribution to television – a prize they jointly shared with Eastenders, which most consider the big winner of the night
The London-based soap, which first aired in 1985, took four awards back to Albert Square, which also included one for Best Soap. EastEnders veteran Lindsey Coulson picked up an award for Best Soap Actress, while her co-star Danny Dyer was presented with Best Soap Actor. The night was not all smiles, however. Taking to the stage to collect his award, Dyer, who plays Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, launched into a foul-mouthed rant directed at compere David Mitchell. The audience were shocked into silence, although professional neurotic Mitchell soon had them laughing again.
