It’s official. TV is now more popular than it ever has been. A report from the Broadcaster’s Audience Research Board shows that the average Briton spends almost 4 hours watching TV everyday. This is of course good news for the TV industry, which has faced increasing competition due to the high number of alternative entertainment formats. However, there are concerns that the TV industry is reaching a peak which it is unlikely to be able to maintain for much longer.
The primary concern is the amount of choice available to the viewers. We are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to content and we are now reaching a point where we are spending almost as much time searching for what we want to watch as we do watching it. There is a major concern that this could have a severe effect on the TV industry and steps are already being taken to try and reduce any potential impact it may have.
Content recommendation services, that are set to become very popular in the future, will recommend programs to you based on what you have enjoyed previously. So, in the future it seems that as we watch our cheap LCD TVs we’ll be advised on what to watch based on content suited to our tastes filtered from a variety of different sources.
However, this begs the question, who says so much choice is necessarily a bad thing. When we make decisions about choosing TV programs we know what we like, so why does this decision need to be made for us. When it comes to cheap LCD TVs there’s an unbelievable amount of choice available to us, so why shouldn’t there be just as much choice when it comes to what we watch on them?
