In our continuing series, we’re celebrating the best TV of 2014. So today, let’s high-tail it across the Atlantic to the land of the Stars and Stripes, and discover what the Yankees have been blessing our TV screens with. And we’re starting with…
True Detective
Every good detective needs a partner. And the True Detective chaps are no different. Hollywood stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey take the lead in a cracking cop show set in Louisiana. And it’s not just another plod-based procedural either, the sort you’ll catch the beginning of on ITV on a Sunday and forget about shortly after. True Detective jumps timelines across 17 years as the criminal investigators hunt for a serial killer. The story is awesomely engaging, and the script simply sparkles.
How to Get Away with Murder
We’ve all been there. One day you’re a university law professor, the next you’re embroiled in a murder plot along with your students. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? How to Get Away with Murder might be an American drama – or melodrama, if you’re more cynical – but it isn’t just your everyday LA Law rip-off. With genuinely great character exploration, along with a nifty plot, this is one to watch – especially since it’s been renewed for a second season.
Gotham
Superheroes, they’re everywhere, right? On cinema, in toy-shops, on lunch-boxes and in video games. And TV is no exception. Sort of. Gotham isn’t quite the Batman series you might think – it takes the Smallville approach, about a time before the Caped Crusader got his cowl. The main focus of Gotham is fresh-faced cop, Jim Gordon, and the boy who will be Batman, Bruce Wayne. There’s also peeks at Catwoman, the Penguin before, well, they actually become Catwoman and the Penguin. But those awesome super-villain origins will come as the series continues.
