My Cart - Fantasy is a genre that has dominated the film industry for many years; it’s great to just sit back, relax and immerse yourself in another world for an hour or 2…or a whole day if you’re watching a trilogy. There are so many films to choose from, that creating this list was an exceptionally hard feat, although in true fantastical form, we accepted that quest and have conquered our enemies to determine the best fantasy films of all time!
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Peter Jackson’s interpretation of Tolkein’s trilogy is marvellous and nothing short of epic (well, there’s nothing short about anything to do with Tolkein!) – if you know anyone who hasn’t seen this series, make them watch it now! With an outstanding cast, amazing set design and incredible visual effects, it’s no surprise that this trilogy was such a success at the box office and DVD market. With Elves, Hobbits, Dwarves, Orcs, and, of course, Gollum himself – it really is the fantasy film to rule them all!
Pan’s Labyrinth
Pan’s Labyrinth certainly isn’t a children’s fantasy film, with violence and creatures that are more on the horror side of things, director Guillermo Del Toro has created a dark fantasy and a cult classic that is made of the stuff of nightmares. With brilliant visual effects and unique story-line, Pan’s Labyrinth is up there with the best of them.
The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride is one of the BEST live-action comedy fantasy films of all time; with fantastic quotable lines; say it with us now, ‘Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!’ With a mocking attitude towards the typical ‘Damsel in Distress’ character, this film is full of clichés, excellent action scenes and, of course, romance!
Shrek
As one of the most successful animated films out there, Shrek had to feature on our list; again another comedy with an out of the ordinary ending; this film is definitely a top choice. Well, you can’t really go wrong with Mike Myers voicing an ogre and Cameron Diaz playing a princess, can you?
Labyrinth
Labyrinth is possibly one of the most memorable fantasy films out there, and not just for David Bowie’s strange choice of tight white leggings…
With a teen heroine, puppetry, and Bowies singing it’s a distinctive film – there certainly isn’t another film out there which can match it for its…unique…qualities! It’s still a firm favourite though!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Anything from Monty Python is bound to be hysterical but the Holy Grail is certainly special! Bizarre and wonderfully simplistic, this film is a must-see if you’re a fantasy nut! Fantasy and comedy goes hand in hand. There is only one word that can describe this film; brilliant.
