Time to get your game-face on! Man, last year was probably one of the worst years for gaming since Atari buried ET in a New Mexico landfill and crashed the industry. Ok, there were a handful of great games to be released. Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 and Bayonetta 2 were brilliant; Dark Souls 2 was a hardcore hit; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare breathed new life into the FPS franchise; and Wolfenstein: The New Order was unexpectedly excellent. But by and large they were either bland and boring – like Watch_Dogs – or they were riddled with glitches – like the equally tired Assassin’s Creed Unity. Even the solid shooter Destiny didn’t quite have the energy to lift itself out of the ‘Not bad’ reviews and into the ‘Unmissable’.
Thankfully, there’s reason to get hyped for 2015, which promises some seriously awesome games to keep us playing. Games like…
Batman: Arkham Knight
British developer Rocksteady hit the high notes with their Arkham series. The fluid combat and the power fantasy of, y’know, actually being the Caped Crusader made for some of the best gameplay we’ve ever seen. And their rounding off their trilogy with the equally promising Arkham Knight. No Joker this time – apparently – so we’re going up against the nightmarish hallucinogen-inducing Scarecrow, who’s holding Gotham to ransom. Oh, and we’ll all finally get to drive the Batmobile!
Release: June 2nd
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher is often thought of as ‘just another fantasy game’; the poor man’s Skyrim. But The Witcher 3 looks set to change all that. The game’s map is huge, and every choice the player makes has some impact on the world. Better yet Polish developers CD Projekt Red have confirmed that all the DLC will be free if you buy the game. Nice of them not to rip off their fans like some games companies do.
Release: May 19th
Rise of the Tomb Raider
2013’s Tomb Raider reboot might not have been a massive financial hit, but it was definitely a great game that took the best of Lara Croft, but added a gritty tint to her origin story – because gritty is tres cool after Batman Begins. So we’re looking forward to seeing where the Xbox-exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider will take us.
Release: Late 2015
Assassin’s Creed Victory
After the bodge-job that was Unity, Assassin’s Creed has no right to be on any list of best games. But… We’re a sucker for the setting for Victory. Grab your top hat and step back to Victorian London. Not much else is known about the game, but hopefully Ubisoft can make up for last year’s disaster. Especially if you can fight atop a Brougham cab.
Release: Likely October/November
Star Wars: Battlefront
With a new film hitting the big screen, no surprise there’s a Star Wars video game on the way. Except, this isn’t just a cheap movie tie-in. Made by Battlefield devs, DICE, Star Wars: Battlefront takes all that’s good and beautiful about BF – realistic shooting, vehicles, destructible environments – and gives them a Star Wars skin. So if you’ve ever wanted to battle on Hoth, or shoot Ewoks on Endor, then this is the game you’ll want.
