Tim Burton’s Dumbo: Disney’s Live Action Remakes

This week it was announced that Tim Burton would direct a new, live-action version of the classic Disney film Dumbo.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Burton plans to use a combination of CGI and live-action to recreate the 1941 classic, which tells the tale of an elephant mocked for having large ears, which he eventually uses to learn to fly.

In recent years, Disney have begun a trend of re-creating their classics, so in light of this week’s news we’re going to look at some classic remakes that Disney has undertaken so far.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Dumbo isn’t the first Disney classic remake that Tim Burton has directed. In 2010, Alice in Wonderland was released, which used a combination of live-action and CGI filming techniques to recreate the original Disney version released in 1951.

While the original focused primarily on the story from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Tim Burton’s version is based more on Through the Looking Glass, meaning that this live-action remake serves as a sequel for the original.

Maleficent (2014)

Robert Stromberg’s 2014 film brings live-action to the Disney classic Sleeping Beauty, the animated version of which was released in 1959. This film puts an unusual twist on the classic, showing the story from the perspective of the antagonist of the first film, Maleficent.

Starring Angelina Jolie in the lead role of Maleficent, this film also uses the popular option of combining CGI with live-action, which offers a completely immersive film experience.

Cinderella (2015)

Today marks another historic point is Disney history as they are set to release the live-action remake of Cinderella.

The remake borrows many elements from the original, and has been very well received by critics prior to its release. Starring Lily James and Helena Bonham Carter, this film is set to be even more successful than the original, and will be widely viewed alongside the much-anticipated short Frozen Fever.

Disney has now started a trend for making live-action versions of their animated classics, and thus far they have been incredibly successful in doing so.
