My Cart - British TV has certainly had some high points, right? You know, the coronation of the Queen, 1966 World Cup (and all those other World Cups we try to forget), literally any one of Paxman’s Newsnight interviews – the sorts of things you’ll never forget.
But when it comes to really memorable moments, comedy wins all. So what are your favourite British comedy moments? Here’s a few of our ideas…
A Car Thrashing
Uptight, stressed-out Torquay B’n’B manager Basil Fawlty has always been just one slip-up away from madness – and when his Austin 1100 refuses to start, it tips him right over the edge. Maybe it’s John Cleese’s awkwardly gangly frame, maybe the fact that he’s certain the car’s mocking him, or his choice of weapon – a leafy branch – but whatever it is, it’s amazing.
Play It Nice and Cool
If you’ve ever sat through one of those 16-hour long talking head shows called ‘Side-Splittingly Hilarious Clips of the Funniest Sit-Com Moments in the World Ever’, then you’ve probably seen this. But hey, there’s a reason why Del Boy’s fall through the bar tops those sorts of lists – it’s one of the most side-splittingly hilarious and funniest sit-com moments in the world ever.
Who Reads the Papers?
Just as great comedy is based on tragedy, so too, great satire is based on truth. So Sir Humphrey’s view of the entire British population, based on what papers they read isn’t just an incredibly funny – and incredibly narrow – assessment of the population. Underneath it all, you sense that maybe that’s how the Civil Service really does see anyone outside of their ranks, including the ministers!
They’ll Have the Same
Ok, let’s stick with politics for a moment. In the 80s, one satire trumped all. Spitting Image, and this sketch neatly summed up how some people viewed the Prime Minister. How does she have her steak? Raw. And what about the vegetables…?
Far More Sporting
Blackadder, that genius schoolboy romp through history, has had some amazing one-liners, and turned the well-crafted analogy into an art-form. So it’s hard to pick a single moment – especially as a lot of the comedy is verbal, rather than visual. But for stand-out moments, it’s got to be the series finale. An epic blend of comedy and tragedy, and even though you know these boys are going to bite it, there’s still a whole lotta jokes, and a very cunning plan, to be had.
