Greatest Movie Soundtracks of All Time – Part One

At Electronic World, we often praise the merits of products like our cheap LED televisions, as they really are a great way to watch your favourite films in style. However, this got us thinking how much there actually is in a really good film, beyond even the appeal of the visuals. Namely, we’re talking about the sound… or more specifically the soundtracks. You can’t deny that some smash-hit films have achieved legendary status upon the back of a stunning score, so we thought it was high time that we celebrated some of the flicks that boast the greatest soundtracks ever. Here’s part one…

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange is a renowned film for many good reasons, but if you haven’t ever taken the time to dwell upon the exceptional soundtrack, you really must. Truly worthy of being described as ‘era-defining’, A Clockwork Orange puts its own unique spin on melodies such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, fusing classical notes with electronic-synthetic music. The soundtrack’s popularity has seen motifs from it re-used time and again, and we’re not about to argue with that decision.

Goldfinger

The most famous Bond movie also happens to have one of the all-time great soundtracks, and we’re not just talking about the instantly iconic title theme. Sung by Dame Shirley Bassey, this song sets the tone for the whole movie; a glorious romp that favours a soundtrack of boundless energy and prominent brass notes. People tend to remember Goldfinger for Bond icons like Oddjob, Auric Goldfinger himself or the infamous scene where a prone Shirley Eaton lies covered in gold paint, but the film wouldn’t have been such an enduring success story without the support of the soundtrack.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

OK, so it’s not one film, but you can’t separate the three film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary masterpiece; especially when it comes to the scores. After all, Tolkien objected to the publisher’s suggestion to divide The Lord of the Rings into three distinct volumes, so we don’t see why we shouldn’t keep the films together. When it comes to the big-screen adaptations, about the only criticism we can think of is their length, but the soundtrack is a particular highlight. Elevating the entire spectacle to a real art form, the score is now a firm favourite among classical music lovers.

The Star Wars Saga

Yes, we’re doing it again, and including multiple films for the price of one. Whatever your opinion may be on Episodes 1-3 – that is, if you even recognise the existence of Episodes 1-3, of course – you can’t deny that John Williams delivers a stellar audio experience across all six films. Another long-standing classical masterpiece, the scope of the Star Wars soundtrack ranges from haunting atmospheric scenes, to breathless lightsaber-battling themes like ‘Duel of the Fates’, the inimitable ‘Imperial March’ and even the eyebrow-raising ‘Mad About Me’ from Mos Eisley’s cantina. However, it has to be the main Star Wars theme that most people recall; a true piece of cinema history.

Trying to mine the wealth of glorious film soundtracks in just one post is pretty unrealistic, so stay tuned for the next instalment in our series; we still have plenty of films to call on, after all.
