Everyone loves a documentary. Whether it is a David Attenborough nature based classic or a hard hitting biopic; there’s a documentary for everyone to enjoy.
We’ve compiled a list of the best documentaries on Netlfix to get those brains thinking a little outside the boundaries of the reality based TV which is dominating our screens of late.
Blackfish
Since its release in 2013, the highly acclaimed Blackfish is one of the most popular documentaries on Netflix. Due to its extremely sensitive topic that outright highlights what is going on in one of America’s most successful corporations, it’s easy to pinpoint why more people are becoming increasingly intrigued by what this film has to say.
The film addresses the capture and confinement of Killer Whales; mainly by Sea World and how this environment affects their wellbeing and actions. It includes interviews with former trainers, as well as the opinions of whale experts who have studied these animals in their wild habitat.
The film focuses on one of the most famous whales in Sea World’s collection; Tilikum, a 12,000 pound Orca who has been involved in the deaths of 3 people while in captivity.
We think that this is a must see for everyone who has ever thought about visiting a marine park, or even those who have in the past, if only to see what goes on when the show is over.
A Band Called Death
A Band Called Death is a music orientated documentary that revolves around the Detroit based group Death.
The film focuses on the band that began producing a punk rock style of music, during a time where punk wasn’t even a genre of music. This meant they formed this style of music before the Ramones, the Sex Pistols and various other well known punk bands.
Following their journey from their failed demo recordings to their revival 30 years after being turned down by multiple record labels; the film talks to many famous fans of the band, including Alice Cooper and Elijah Wood while highlighting the families deep, personal bonds that saw them through what others may have simply given up on.
This is a must see for any music fan who is interested in the punk era of music.
The Imposter
For all you fans of the unsettling and creepy; the Imposter follows the case of French con artist Frédéric Bourdin, who impersonated a missing Texan boy, Nicholas Barclay who was 13 in 1994.
We don’t want to give away too much about this bizarre and haunting film, so we will say this- mixing interviews with a variety of people who were involved with the case, including both families and Bourdin himself, this investigative piece will leave you in awe at how this event took place.
Even the way the shots are set up makes the audience feel uncomfortable; interviews with the families are shot in the typical subject-looks-off-camera style shot, whereas the interview with Bourdin has him looking straight into the camera.
This is rather intense, considering that this man conned a lot of people, but the way this is shot shows the audience what a controlling presence this man has. It makes you feel vulnerable, because it seems like his is staring directly into your eyes.
This is an excellent film for pretty much anyone to watch…and we recommend you do!
