Graded televisions are often looked down on and regarded as being something people only buy because they can’t afford a brand new TV. As big fans of graded televisions, we think that a lot of the stigma surrounding them comes from misconceptions and people not knowing what exactly a graded TV is.
When the word graded gets brought up, people automatically think faulty and broken – and this couldn’t be more untrue. Of course there are probably some televisions that are sold because they have slight cosmetic damage, but this isn’t what graded actually means. Those that do have slight wear and tear will be highlighted as having so before they are sold on, with information clearly noting why they have been discounted.
So what does a graded television mean if it doesn’t mean damaged? What makes a television graded? These are some brilliant questions, and we hope to answer them all in our post. We aim to seek out some of the biggest misconceptions and myths surrounding graded TVs and give you information on why these are simply just rumours.
Graded Televisions Are Thought of as Being:
Old & Outdated
Wrong. There is no reason why a graded television that you have purchased can’t be as new as the ones that are being sold on the high street. In fact, most of them will be the newest models. The only time that graded televisions might be considered ‘old’ is when they are end of line stock and a newer model is due to be released in the near future. But if you’re looking for cheap TVs, is the newest more expensive model really a must buy?
Faulty Stock
As we mentioned above, graded stock does not mean that the products are faulty or damaged. Did you know that if a television set has a damaged box then that would be considered as being graded? Even though there is absolutely nothing wrong with the actual TV. Would you really want to pay extra money for the box?
Second Hand
We’ve heard a lot of people refer to graded stock as being second hand, but what is the truth? Some graded televisions are the result of someone bringing back a TV under their 10/20/30 day guarantee, which leads people to think that they are second hand and therefore not as good. The fact is, anyone who wants to return a TV will have to return it in perfect condition – a lot of places state that it must be unused. Because the packaging has been opened, it now has to be listed as graded – even though it hasn’t been switched on. You’re getting a brand new television for a discounted price.
Sometimes stock is listed as graded because it has been used in the shop on display. Although it’s in fully working condition and barely used, it’s still seen as second hand.
Have no Guarantee
A graded television must come with no guarantee or warranty right? Sorry, that’s also a complete misconception. If you’re buying from a reputable and professional company, there is absolutely no reason for why they shouldn’t be giving you some kind of warranty with your purchase. You’ll be surprised that a lot of companies will offer you this without even being asked.
Unreliable
Your graded television that you just got a brilliant bargain with shouldn’t be any more unreliable than the brand new one that your neighbour just bought for double the price. When you’re told that you get what you paid for, this isn’t true when it comes to graded stock. We like to think of it as getting what you paid for, and so much more!
Off The Black Market
We’ve heard this misconception a lot. People are always wondering ‘what’s the catch?’ or ‘there must be a reason for why these televisions are so cheap?’ We understand why people think like this, but it’s not true. There is nothing dodgy or illegal about graded stock – which is the reason why so many electronic companies are now selling these cheap TVs. It’s simply that something has happened so they can’t be regarded as new, even if this is just that there is an overstock.
Poor Condition
As we said right at the beginning of this post, any television that might be slightly damaged or faulty will be clearly highlighted as having problems before being resold. Otherwise, there is no reason why your graded television should be in poor condition. The box might be a little damaged, but the television inside will be as good as new! If there is any problems with your set, just return it as soon as possible – you shouldn’t have to put up with an unreliable television.
Not Top Brands
You can’t get a top brand graded television right? Wrong! Most graded televisions are from the biggest and most well known brands. When stock is listed as graded, it’s because of the circumstances surrounding the product and not who or where it is from. If a Samsung television is an ex display model or has a damaged box it will be treated exactly the same as any other branded television.
Unwanted
Why should you buy a TV that someone else doesn’t want? We don’t know what prompts people into returning stock, but that shouldn’t put you off taking advantage of this and grabbing yourself a brilliant TV for a brilliant price!
Uncool
We’re being serious! A lot of people say that they are put off buying graded stock because they are afraid that their friends and family are going to look down on them. They think that people will think they are cheap because they’ve bought a graded television and not a brand new model. This is silly, as unless you advertise your purchase (and why wouldn’t you want your friends to know about these fantastic offers?), no one will be able to tell if your television is new, old, graded or second hand. It will look and work like any other television!
As you can see from this post, there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a graded television. In fact, the only problem would be missing out on a complete bargain. Why spend all your money on buying a brand new TV, when you could get the exact same one for a lot cheaper? What if you’re just paying the extra money for the nice undamaged box? Yeah – we think we would much prefer to save the pennies.
