My Cart - It’s possible that you may have heard some of the horror stories that have been circulated in the press recently about flat screen TVs that have been improperly mounted to walls tumbling down and causing injuries to anyone unfortunate enough to be beneath them at the time.
You might think that this is the sort of thing that couldn’t possibly happen in your own home, but you should think again as TVs are heavy and if they’re not been secured to their mountings adequately then there is a very real danger of them falling. The best outcome in this situation is you’re left with a ruined TV and some DIY work to do to cover up the holes where the mounting screws have been ripped from the wall. The worst case scenario is that somebody could be seriously injured, possibly fatally by the weight of a falling TV.
So with that thought in mind it’s better to not take risks and make sure that if you’re going to mount a TV on your wall that you do it properly. The larger flat panel TVs often weigh in excess of 20kg so it’s important the mountings are fixed to brick walls with long screws. As foolish as it sounds there have been instances where people have fixed their TV to a plasterboard wall only for it drop from the fittings within minutes of being mounted.
Commonsense should dictate where and where not to mount your TV, however there is no accounting for the way in which some people think, so manufacturers have taken no risks and provided very explicit instructions with their wall mounts. Irrespective of this a surprising number of people manage to fit their TVs improperly, so make sure you don’t become one. Read the instructions and ensure you mount the TV properly, the last thing you want is your new Samsung LCD TV to drop off the wall and the screen crack as it hits the floor during Eastenders.
