TV Characters You Had No Clue Were Recast (Part 1)

If you were to hear that your favourite TV character was going to be replaced by a different actor, how would you react? Many claim that they wouldn’t be happy, and that it would stop them from continuing with the show.

We think these people would be surprised to know that it’s a pretty common occurrence in the world of TV (especially in soaps – remember Sarah Lou of Coronation Street fame?).

A lot of shows have replaced actors with new ones, with hardly any complaint from the audience. In fact, a lot of the time, we’re sure that no one really noticed! Some were replaced after the first episode, whilst some much later on.

We’ve put together a list of some TV characters from our favourite shows that have been portrayed by more than one actor. Did you know most of these?

Kaitlin Cooper (The OC)

Marissa Cooper’s younger sister Kaitlin really came into her own in the third season of the show. After returning from boarding school, she became a reoccurring character until she was made part of the main cast in the fourth and final season.

Actress Willa Holland did a brilliant job portraying a character that was both manipulative and vulnerable. She made Kaitlin into a character that we rooted for, despite her obvious bad traits.

However, did you know that Kaitlin Cooper was a character in the first season? Played by someone completely different? Yup! She was played by the star of the Divergent film series; Shailene Woodley. She played the younger Cooper for 6 episodes before being shipped off to boarding school (and evidently another show).

Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)

Technically, the role of Daenerys was recast before it even made it to TV. In the unseen pilot that is sent to TV networks before being picked up, the role of the dragon’s mother was originally portrayed by The Tudor’s actress Tamzin Merchant.

For some unknown reason, despite her having costumed drama experience, she was replaced by a relatively unknown actress. Emilia Clarke hadn’t really acted in anything note worthy when she was brought onto the show, but has since made herself into a household name.

We can’t imagine anyone else playing the role now – imagine how different things could have been?

Ruby (Supernatural)

When it comes to Supernatural, they basically have a free reign to do as they wish. This is because in a world with demons, it’s must easier to explain why a different actor suddenly pops up playing a well known character. This was the case when it came to calculating demon Ruby.

Originally played by Katie Cassidy, Ruby appeared in the third season, helping Dean and Sam in their fight against demons (despite being one). She wasn’t a fan favourite, but fans did start to warm to her by the end of the season.

It was a huge surprise to everyone in season four, when Ruby came back as a different person. She was now being portrayed by actress Genevieve Cortese, who happened to be married to one of the lead actors in real life. Some people say it was because Katie Cassidy was asking for more money, but we doubt we will ever know. Fans weren’t happy though, many compalined that Cortese couldn’t act the part the same.
