Wait, What? Famous Characters That Were Nearly Played by Someone Else (Part 2)

Welcome back to our look at some of the most iconic film and TV characters that were nearly played by someone else. Last time, we highlighted that the famous ‘Life is like a box of chocolates’ speech could have been uttered by John Travolta; that the Corleone family was nearly ran by Jack Nicolson; and that Star Wars could have turned into Scarface in space if Pacino had taken the role of Han Solo.

So, what interesting parts will we be see this time around? Well take a look and find out!

Robin Williams – Hagrid (The Harry Potter franchise)

How strange would this one be? Now, we’re not saying that Williams couldn’t do serious, in fact his roles in Good Will Hunting and Good Morning Vietnam got him numerous praise and award nominations, and rightly so! However, he didn’t have to change much about himself for those roles – unlike Hagrid, where he would be a Scottish, half-giant with a huge beard which we know Williams would have ran with, and maybe played it a bit over the top.

Robin, we love you but we have to go with Robbie Coltrane on this one – he just has the perfect blend of oafishness, kindliness and loyalty that no-one could ever match.

David Schwimmer – Agent J (Men in Black franchise)

Poor David Schwimmer, it seems he can never get a break and to be honest, he’s not a terrible actor – it’s just too hard to imagine him as anyone else other than Ross from Friends. Of course, we could have tried it out if the studio had gone with him for Men in Black, but they went with Will Smith instead. Probably for the best, as Will Smith brought the charm and wit he brings to every role, which made the perfect counter-part to Tommy Lee Jones’ sour and surly, agent K.

Sean Connery – Gandalf/Morpheous (The Lord of the Rings/ The Matrix franchises)

For this one, it’s a double whammy, which we only thought appropriate as we can’t even begin to imagine what these roles would have been like with Connery at the helm. Imagine all the important exposition Galdalf gives in the Fellowship of the Ring spoken with that famous way Connery is known to talk.

‘A Wizshard ish nevah late, he arrives precishley when he meansh too!’ – Now that would have been something!

The same goes for the Matrix, imagine when Neo finds out that his entire life has been nothing but a simulation that he’s being told by someone who doesn’t understand what he’s saying (that was the reason Connery didn’t do either role, he didn’t understand it).

Probably for the best.

That’s it for part 2, but as there are so many iconic roles that nearly went to other actors, we thought it’d be more fun to do more than two parts, so keep checking back for future entries in the series!
