2016 is set to be a huge year for the world of sports. From the Olympics to the UEFA European Championship, some of the biggest sporting events in the world are due to kick off very soon.
Looking to book your summer holiday? Planning a special birthday event? Here are some dates that you definitely want to avoid.
7th – 10th
The Masters (Augusta, USA) – Golf
The first event for your sporting calendars is the Masters Championship which takes place in Augusta this April. It is the first of four major golf tournaments and is always the first one to be played. The very first tournament was played in 1934!
The favourites to top the competition include Jason Day, Rory Mcllroy and Jordan Spieth. It’s uncertain if Tiger Woods will take part this year after an injury to his back.
9th
The Grand National (Liverpool, UK) – Horse Racing
The Grand National is one of the biggest horse racing competitions in the UK and is hosted at Aintree in Liverpool every year. The first ever Grand National took place back in the 1800’s. It’s one of the biggest events, especially Ladies Day, which sees women from all over the country attend the event in their very best clothes.
It’s estimated that around 600 million tune in to watch the broadcast, from over 140 different countries. It’s a brilliant excuse to get your friends round for a few drinks!
The London Marathon (London, UK) – Athletics
Are any of you participating in the London Marathon this year? If you are then we want to wish you good luck! We will be cheering on from home. For those who are excited to watch the race on TV, it’s worth knowing that BBC always provides live coverage from the event. The event is due to start at 10am.
JUNE
10th – 10th July
UEFA European Championship 2016 (France) – Football
The 2016 Euro’s is the event that all football fans are looking forward to this year. It has been 4 years since the last Euros, in which England were knocked out by Italy during the knockout stages. They’ve had a really good qualifying run, winning 10 out of 10 games. They even beat Germany in a friendly on Saturday night. But how well will they do in the competition?
With people urging Roy Hodgson to give the youth a chance, will Captain Wayne Rooney be left on the bench following an injury? Only time will tell but we’re excited!
Wimbledon (Wimbledon, UK) – Tennis
Our favourite tennis event is back this July – we can’t believe that it’s come around so quickly! It’s the oldest tennis tournament in the world and a lot of people consider it as being the most prestigious. There are 5 main events (boy’s singles, girl’s singles, girl’s doubles, boy’s doubles, and mixed doubles) that take place over 2 full weeks.
British tennis player Andy Murray won the tournament back in 2013 and will be hoping to achieve the same success again in June.
AUGUST
5th – 21st
Olympic Games (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
We love the Olympics! It’s not quite as exciting as when it took place in London back in 2012, but we’re still pretty excited for the Olympic Games to kick off in August. Taking place in Brazil, there will be 17 days of fantastic events on offer. 306 medal events will take place, with over 10,000 athletes competing to win a gold medal.
42 sports are involved in the Olympics, including swimming, athletics, shooting, cycling, football, rowing and gymnastics. There is literally something for everyone to enjoy!
These events deserve to be watched in HD and nothing else. Before you invite your friends around for sport, food and drinks, why don’t you treat yourself to a brand new TV? We have a fantastic collection of 4K TVs available, as well as something a little more suited to those with a smaller budget.
