Panasonic have unveiled the impossible – an invisible TV that simply disappears when you switch it off. The tech giant unveiled their masterpiece at the Consumer Electronics show in January, then took it away and refined it and relaunched it this October – slimmer, sleeker and even more transparent, Panasonic showed their invisible TV as a sliding panel in a display cabinet.
So is this the gamechanger for the good old domestic gogglebox?
How Did They Do It?
The screen itself is made of an ultra fine mesh, embedded in a glass panel. The use of OLED (organic light emitting diodes) means that Panasonic have done away with backlighting – each OLED is its own light source – so the panel itself can be ultra thin. It’s the same technology you see in standard flat panel OLED TVs, simply taken out of the standard black box.
The effect is quite incredible, as the TV image seems to appear out of nowhere when you switch it on.
Better Living Tomorrow
The aim, Panasonic say, is to allow consumer technology to blend seamlessly into the home. Because it’s smart, it’s not just a TV but a photo gallery, a streaming platform and a music centre that can be activated by motion, voice and remote. And you can adjust the height of the panel remotely, too, so you can watch from anywhere.
Currently the Panasonic invisible TV is a 1080p display, but is expected to be a full 4K panel when it finally goes into production.
I want one! Where Can I Get It?
Nowhere, yet. Panasonic say their invisible TV won’t go into production for at least two years. However, you might see transparent screen technology in other areas of your home more quickly – how about a wine chiller with a transparent touch screen display that brings up the contents, tasting notes and even recipes?
If you have your heart set on a transparent display, we don’t stock them – yet. But at Electronic World we’re happy to help you upgrade that old TV. Just contact us and our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be happy to help.
