Televisions have become one of the most sold products in the world; it’s hard not to find at least one television anywhere you go. You probably have more than one if your own home!
But have you ever wondered how common televisions actually are across the entire world? Well, we’ve looked into the amount of televisions that are present in each household in various countries, to try and get an understanding of whether televisions really are as universal as we believe.
PLEASE NOTE: This doesn’t include any handheld gadgets, such as laptops, tablets, or mobile phones.
Households in the UK
In the UK, there is a population of approximately 65 million people, which is a huge amount, considering the fact that the USA is just over forty times as large – in terms of land area – and has five times the population. According to the Office of National Statistics, there are said to be 27.1 million households in the UK in 2016.
According to the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board, also known as BARB, in the beginning of 2016, around 96% of households in the UK had at least one television; that means that around 1.08 million households in the UK had no TV at all.
By far, the most popular option to go for in UK homes is one television; around 40% of UK household have just one television. By looking at the report mentioned, we can figure out the average amount of televisions that a UK household has. By doing some calculations, the average UK household has 1.935 TVs, or two if you want to round it up.
Households in the USA
In the USA, there is a population of just over 318 million people. According to Statista, in 2015, the number of households within the USA was 124.59 million. According to Nielsen Holdings PLC, 116.4 million of the 124.59 million households had at least one television, a percentage of roughly 93%.
However, finding how many televisions each household has in the USA is relatively difficult to find. The most concrete evidence that is available to us is from 2010; during this time, the average amount of televisions in each household in the USA was 2.93, one whole television more than on average in the UK in 2016.
Households in East Asia
Japan is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, and it is safe to say that a lot of their households have televisions. According to Nakono, with an extrapolation from OECD, in 2012, the number of households in Japan that had televisions compared to the total number of households was 99.5%; one of the largest values across the world.
This is due to the vast amount of television manufacturers and the technological advances that East Asia has compared to the rest of the world. This is valid for other countries in East Asia; South Korea is another country that has huge electronic manufacturers operating there, such as Samsung and Panasonic.
In South Korea, the number of households that had televisions compared to the total number of households in 2012 was just under 99%. If you think that is a lot, take a look at the incredibly wealthy countries in East Asia, such as Singapore and Hong Kong; the percentages are virtually 100% – nearly every single household in these countries have a television!
There are so many countries to look at, but the countries discussed are the most well-known and have the largest economies in the world, so it is fair to say that televisions are an important aspect of all our lives.
