Die Hard (1988)
During Christmas, John McClane, NYPD cop, visits his wife in Los Angeles, where she works for a company called Nakatomi Corporation. While at the Christmas party held in the building, Hans Gruber and his group of bank robbers target the building and hold the party guests hostage. John manages to slip away and ends up having to take matters into his own hands due to the delayed police response.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
This retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol tells the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge in a musical, comedy-drama film for the entire family. It features The Muppets and Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge, closely following the original story of a stingy, old man and his story of redemption.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
This famous and popular Tim Burton film is a stop-motion, dark fantasy musical that tells the story of Halloween Town and Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King. When he stumbles upon Christmas Town, he sees a chance of breaking his routine of scaring people in the real world during Halloween. Having grown weary of his repetitive job, Jack begins to obsess over introducing Christmas to Halloween Town. His obsession with the festive season leads to him trying to take over Christmas and usurping the role of “Sandy Claws”.
The Santa Clause (1994)
On Christmas Eve, Scott Calvin and his son Charlie hear sounds on the roof in the middle of the night. Scott accidentally startles the man on the roof, Santa, who falls and dies. Left behind is Santa’s suit and reindeer, and a card saying to put on the suit if he has any accidents. The happenings that follow after Scott puts on the suit will challenge the beliefs of everyone involved in Scott and Charlie’s lives, with the realisation that there is a Santa Claus.
Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
Based on the 1947 original film, Miracle on 34th Street is a family friendly film about the spirit of Christmas. Kris Kringle, recently hired Santa Claus, actually believes he’s Santa, which poses an issue to Dorey Walker, the person in charge of hiring Santas. Dorey’s daughter Susan is only six years old, but she already doesn’t believe in Santa. Susan and her mother learn a lot about faith and the festive spirit throughout the film.
Jingle all the Way (1996)
This family comedy about Howard Langston and his son Jaime. Howard is a workaholic, and he tries to redeem himself by fulfilling his son’s ultimate Christmas wish of receiving an action figure of a popular children’s TC superhero, Turbo-Man.
Jack Frost (1998)
Lead singer of the band “The Jack Frost Band”, Jack Frost, doesn’t spend too much time with his son Charlie as he’s on the road a lot for his career. Jack promises to take Charlie on a family Christmas trip to the mountains after missing his hockey game, but he gets a call for a gig that could make his career. On his way to the gig he realises he made a mistake but the stormy weather makes him crash, and he dies instantly. A year after Jack passed away, his son Charlie makes a snowman that resembles Jack, who comes back to life embodying the snowman.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
The Whos in Whoville love Christmas, finding it a time of great joy and giving. Outside Whoville, however, lives the Grinch, who hates Christmas a tries to steal it from the Whos. His hatred for both the festive season and the residents of Whoville make him an outcast to all but a small child, Cindy Lou Who, who decides to try to befriend him.
Love Actually (2003)
This film combines the spirit of Christmas with the complication of several love stories. A true Christmas classic, it showcases the intricacy of human life through interrelated stories that represent romantic and family love.
The Polar Express (2004)
This animation film tells the story of a young boy who boards a magical train on Christmas Eve. The train is headed to the North Pole and to Santa’s house, providing him with an adventure that takes him in a self-discovery journey of how the wonder of life and the power of belief are connected.
