Samsung has recently unveiled a free 3D TV service available to all owners of their 3D compatible television sets.
The service, which will be available via the TV’s internet connection is currently only offering limited content due to licensing of actual shows, however Samsung plans to introduce more and better content over the course of the year. Andy Griffiths, the vice president of consumer electronics in the UK for Samsung told The Telegraph that, while the company is not officially a broadcaster, and does not intend to begin creating their own shows for the service, it felt it was necessary to deal with the lack of 3D content on offer to their customers.
At present, the service is only featuring trailers or 3D movies and lifestyle documentaries, including motoring shows produced by car manufacturers. Samsung has plans to expand the number of shows on the service over the coming months.
“The demand for 3D is growing rapidly, but only a handful of channels are providing content. Samsung has led the 3D LED TV market since it launched last year, and the roll-out of our 3D video-on-demand service demonstrates our commitment to accelerating its growth,” said Griffiths in the same statement.
Samsung is throwing itself head first into the field of online television content, specifically television apps that give the user access to shows on demand, in much the same way as ITV player and Netflix do.
This is another step towards Samsung offering cheap LED TVs that offer 3D compatibility with a wide range of shows to choose from.
