Fact: The team behind Marvel are geniuses.

Raising iconic comic book characters and introducing them to the rest of the planet in the form of real-life actors is their speciality, and film appreciators in their thousands flock to the cinema each year to catch the latest instalment.

Traditionally striking the perfect balance between action and humour, the Marvel universe is a place in which the possibilities are endless.

But what are the best movies out there? Here is our definitive ranking of best to worst.

The Definitive Ranking

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Never before has a multi-superhero movie come together quite like Guardians of the Galaxy does.

From the brilliant casting to the sharp wit throughout, you’ll be thrown between the edge of your seat and tears of laughter.

To date, Marvel’s best movie.

  1. Iron Man (2008)

Presenting one of the sassiest and quick-witted superheroes who we all love to hate, Iron Man first graced our screens back in 2008 and was the first movie from the Marvel universe to be released.

The buzz that this film created has earned its place at number 2 on our list.

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

An absolute classic, mainly in part due to the introduction of the brilliance that is Chris Evans.

A retracing back to the early days of the original superhero, we all know and love.

  1. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

The most recent on our list, Thor: Ragnarok combines high octane action with the continuation of Thor’s battle to save his homeworld.

A well-executed update on the 2011 original.

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Back gracing our screens last year was Chris Pratt and his army of misfits.

With an excellent overall rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is not one to be missed.

  1. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

The highly anticipated most recent addition to the Captain America trilogy, Civil War is often referred to as the best out of the three.

Never one to stray from conflict within The Avengers, Marvel pits Chris Evans against Iron Man in this blockbuster.

  1. Thor (2011)

A very welcome (albeit brief) addition to the Marvel universe is the onscreen legend that is Anthony Hopkins in this all action movie.

The standard sibling rivalry dynamic is explored to its fullest in this film, and the results are spectacular.

  1. Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Returning to save the day is Chris Hemsworth as Thor in this sequel, which also sees the return of love interest Natalie Portman.

More adventure from Asgard awaits.

  1. The Avengers (2012)

Marvel fans around the world rejoiced when The Avengers was initially announced, and the final product was well worth the wait.

Seeing the combination of some of our favourite heroes on screen at the same time, never before had such a challenging feat been attempted to such a success.

  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Also scoring impressively on popular movie review website Rotten Tomatoes is Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Adjusting to modern day life whilst trying to save the day becomes a theme with Chris Evans’ character, and in this film, we can see this more than ever.

  1. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

After Iron Man jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, a whole new terror is unleashed on the world.

The Avengers have to band together in another fight between good and evil.

  1. Spider-man: Homecoming (2017)

After his first introduction to the Marvel universe in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man is back with his own full-length movie.

The film follows Peter Parker as he deals with the aftermath of his first experience with the Avengers, and tracks him coming into his own with his superhero abilities.

  1. Doctor Strange (2016)

A slightly different take on the standard Marvel film, Dr. Stephen Strange, a well-respected surgeon, suffers a life-changing accident which renders his hands as useless.

In his quest to regain his mobility, he travels to the fictional Kamar-Taj to study under the Ancient One in sorcery, and it is here that the adventure really begins.

  1. Iron Man 3 (2013)

After the occurrences in the first two films, Tony Stark struggles to function in the normal world.

Then after his livelihood is threatened, Tony must trust his instincts to protect those that he loves.

  1. The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Back in the days when the Hulk was played by Edward Norton, The Incredible Hulk, which smashed into cinemas in 2008, was originally not that much of a commercial success as expected.

Taking up the reigns in 2012’s The Avengers is Mark Ruffalo, and overall reviews have been far kinder this time around. Still, not one to be missed.

  1. Iron Man 2 (2010)

On his big reveal at the end of Iron Man, Tony Stark’s life changes overnight.

In this sequel, we can begin to see the struggles that Stark has to deal with, once his secret identity is revealed.

  1. Ant-Man (2015)

Fresh out of prison is where we find Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, who quickly learns the drawbacks of becoming a superhero.

Special mention – Black Panther (2018)

Only released February 2018, it is too soon to tell whether or not Black Panther is set for success.

However, with several reviewers believing that it is the best adaptation of the franchise, this is definitely not one to be missed.
