When Alexa isn’t creepily laughing at our requests, it can do all sorts of handy things; while it can’t do the washing up for you, it can keep you up to date with the news, play your favourite music, tell you what noise a giraffe makes (what noise DOES a giraffe make?) and even control your TV. That’s right- no remote, no getting up to change the channel – you don’t have to move a muscle.
But how exactly does this work, and can other home assistants such as Google Home and the new HomePod do the same?

Amazon Echo
With your Amazon Echo (Hi, Alexa!), you can control your TV by turning it on and off, change the volume and even change channels. Woah.
To begin this technology adventure, you’ll need a specific hub or remote designed to work with these devices. The Logitech Harmony Remote is compatible with Alexa and is a popular choice, however, there are others such as the AnyMote Home Hub. Apple TV and HomePod
The recently introduced HomePod will no doubt be flying off the shelves. You must have an Apple TV box to be able to control anything on your Smart TV. You can use basic instructions to Siri such as ‘Hey Siri, pause’ or ‘Hey Siri, set the volume to 70%’. Google Home
Google Home and Google Home Mini can control your TV without any added hardware as long as you use a Google Chromecast. However, similar to the Echo, if you have the Logitech Harmony Remote (or similar device) you don’t need a Google connected device and want to do more than play just the audio through it.

If you have Netflix on your Smart TV, you can even link the two together and control it through your Google Home connected devices – you just need to speak up and you have Netflix ready to go!
