While CES 2020 was far from ground-breaking, there have still been a variety of interesting new TVs to ensure that the new decade gets a strong start in the TV industry. Learn more about Samsung’s flagship for 2020 – the Q950 – and the evolution of LG’s rollable TV here.
Samsung Q950
The Samsung Q950 boasts a range of fancy gadgets on the inside, including 8K AI upscaling, the quantum processer 8K, and – of course – beautiful 8K resolutions. As usual, it comes in a range of sizes (from 55 inches to 98).
Regarding the technology contained within the televisions themselves, this year you’ll find that brands are turning away from introducing revolutionary new features and are instead thinking about the ways that televisions interact with interior design trends.
As a result, you can expect the same high-quality 8K pictures on the Q950 that we saw on screens from various brands across 2019, but the Q950 better caters towards a sense of beauty and fashion in the home.
The Q950’s pride lies in its excellently thin bezel – the frame that contains the screen. Ultra-thin screens have been popular for a while now, but Samsung are testing the limits with this television. The Q950 is no deeper than 15mm at any point, and the screen itself is barely encased by the hefty black box that encapsulates almost every other television.
Samsung refer to this type of screen as an ‘infinity screen’. For a television to be classified as an infinity screen, it must have a ratio of 99:1, screen to bezel. As well as Samsung’s emphasis on infinity screens, the Sero, a TV that can be rotated for viewing content in portrait, also featured heavily at CES. The Wall made a return to CES 2020 after its resounding success in 2019.
LG Roller TV Update
Just as Samsung recognised that it had a winner to work with from 2019 (the Wall), LG had a similar conclusion and focused on further perfecting their minimalist roller television for CES 2020. We previously wrote about the first edition of the Rollable 4K OLED TV R on our blog if you want to read that first. If you already know about this TV, however, you’ll be very excited to learn that LG are looking to provide their supporters with even more floor space – LG rollable TVs can now descend from the ceiling.
Let’s take a look at what that looks like:
LG have gone from rolling up to rolling down, proving their engineering expertise when it comes to curved and flexible screens. The roll-down of this new TV harks back to a time when projectors were an important piece of technology for enabling entertainment – and we’re sure that this upgrade will spark a few feelings of nostalgia in some of our older customers.
Like the original rollable, this TV seeks to minimise the amount of space that the typical TV takes up in the home.
For decades now, the TV has been the major focus of interior design. There’s a TV in almost every modern home, and this means that interior design has had to think its way around big black screens. Samsung began this line of thinking when they introduced their range of artistic televisions that acted as a digital gallery for images when the television was not in use, and thus avoiding the big black box of the standby TV.
LG took this one step further, by removing the screen entirely when the TV is not in use, but this left the TV box squarely placed in the room. While this box could act as a small table, generally, it doesn’t make sense from a usability standpoint because all items on the box-table would have to be removed to use the television. The solution was to move the box to the ceiling, creating an invisible TV when the box is recessed, and the TV is not in use.
