New Tech: Folding and Rolling TVs

As the world of technology expands and develops, as do the features of the TV. Over the years, we have seen TV screens grow tenfold, reduce in-depth, and offer a picture like no other. We have witnessed functionalities increase from the standard aerial receiving channels to accessing the world wide web with the ability to control the device via voice command. With all these impressive innovations found in new devices, it was hard to know where big brands such as Samsung, Sony and LG would go next with their developments.

Thankfully whilst they continue to improve on the immersive experiences their TVs offer in domestic settings, they are striving to develop features beyond our imagination. Samsung’s first toe into the next generation of TVs was with their Samsung Frame. The leading attribute of this model is the technology that allows you to display a stunning scene to fit your style that blends seamlessly into your wall as if it were a painting. A great feature and an asset to many homes, but how else are the tech giants expanding on TV features to suit a futuristic home? We cover some of the latest showcases to see what the future of TV could look like.

The Rolling TV

LG is known for its outstanding advanced technology; with this new device, they really have thought outside the box. The rolling 65″ OLED TV offers the beautiful picture known by LG. Still, unlike the standard devices currently available on the market, this giant screen can roll into a compact box.

Much like TVs built into furniture to provide seamless designs to a modern aesthetic, this box offers the next step up in compact and discrete TVs. With a remote control, you can expand and collapse the 65″ display into a box the same width as the TV but less than a quatre of the height.

Whilst the technology is impressive, what actual use is it for real-life applications?

We all remember the rise of popularity of the sleigh beds, which offered a built-in TV. However, their novelty soon ran out when it became clear that they required a sizable frame to encase it. With a rollable TV, you could potentially incorporate it within any piece of furniture, from beds to worktops, without taking up too much space.

The most considerable appeal of the rollable TV is the use of screen size. Whilst watching a movie at home may be a great experience, often, if your TV is much broader than the cinematic display, you will see pesky black frames at the top or bottom of the screen. Although the many years of home cinema watching have led us to ignore this, imagine a TV that can erase these completely, leaving you with the size you require without losing any of the on-screen pictures.

In addition, suppose you are playing music from your TV and only require the play bar and controls; with this device, you can feature only what you need on-screen. This feature offers the optimum size for each platform which could be a step forward in improving the energy efficiency of TVs.

Although these TVs are currently available to buy, they cost a penny or two, with the cheapest in the UK being around £24,999. We imagine it could be some time before we see a significant drop in the price and suspect there will be plenty of time to save before they become the most sought-after TV.

Foldable TVs

Brought to you by a brand which is less known for its TV development is C SEED Entertainment Systems, the notable inventors of the world’s first foldable TV. This colossal TV offers sizes of 103″, 137″ and 165″ and can be customised to fit directly into the structure of your home, folding out from the floor when required.

This TV is not for the faint-hearted (or those who lack substantial space) but provides a 4K display with Micro LED, boasting an experience far beyond OLED and QLED.

Whilst this incredible device stands alone, it is hard to imagine the smart TV in a domestic setting such as your average UK household. However, for the high bracket earners, it can act as a grand statement, and the option to host TV viewing outdoors would offer excellent use for parties. Unfortunately, we just don’t see the appeal of such a gigantic display for day-to-day TV watching.
