The increased cost of living has been steadily growing for many years, with 2022 being the highest since 1992. The rise in costs has been very noticeable from regular grocery shopping, the fluctuation in petrol prices and household bills being through the roof. It can feel a little dark these days, with the promise of a treat feeling long into the distance.
However, whilst the cost of everything seems to be scaring the UK, one price appears to be doing a U-turn and is actually getting cheaper! A smart TV. The cost of a new smart TV (compared to their price and affordability in previous years) is remarkably more affordable. Even without our incredibly cheap TVs, you can pick up a brand new 32” flat screen TV for as little as £159.99. Whilst our prices are still much lower than the recommended retail prices, we are impressed at the affordability of TVs hitting the market. We will explore the currently available prices and compare them to our impressively low-priced TVs.
Cheap Samsung TVs
In previous years, Samsung TV prices have always been higher than most brands. This is due to the expected high-quality and top-of-the-range features Samsung always strived to offer. Even though they provide incredible technology, they have also begun lowering prices.
For example, a 55” Samsung 4K HDR Smart QLED TV, often available for as little as £399.99* from our website, can be found from other big retailers at £749. Whilst this may still feel steep, compared to just four years ago, they have dropped by over £1000. In 2018, the same style of smart TV would cost £2200.
Cheap Sony TVs
Another powerhouse in the TV industry is Sony. This manufacturer is well known for its remarkable sound quality, and in the past few years, even the display has stepped up the game and offers some of the best quality available. Like Samsung, the cost of purchasing a high-quality device has become much more accessible on lower budgets, with large retailers offering a 55” Smart 4K Ultra HD for as little as £749.
In comparison, you can find a cheap Sony TV from us at just £499*. However, when we look back to 2017, a similar TV was selling at around £3000, and the reviews of the processors and interface speeds were abysmal. This means you can get a better TV for a much lower price in 2022.
Cheap Panasonic TVs
Panasonic has always been recommended for high-quality TVs at a lower price than some other big brands. Still, comparing the retail prices from 2018, they have significantly dropped in affordability. For example, just four years ago, you could pick up a 55” smart Panasonic TV for the almighty price of £2299. We currently sell a similar device for approximately £529.99*.
Once again, an incredible price drop for a device that reviews have stated offers excellent quality. A 55” Panasonic Smart TV from larger retailers can cost around £599. As with every other smart TV, this lower price tag does not mean you compromise on quality and in most instances, they perform and offer better technology than their predecessors.
Why Have TV Prices Dropped?
There have been several contributions to the fall in TV prices over the past few years, and in a time when money is hard to spare, consumers very much welcome it.
Manufacture competition. As with most industries, competition is a big contender in the price of products. Making sure you are offering the best price for your products will ensure consistent sales. When consumers are consciously looking to cut back on spending, luxury items such as TVs are often the last item shoppers intend to buy. Keeping costs low ensures that your products sell over higher-priced items from competitors.
Manufacture costs. When Smart TVs, OLED and QLED TVs first came onto the market, the technology was still new, and most of it was still under development. With the progress over the years, manufacturers have made advancements in producing these products to generate them better, cheaper, and quicker with outsourcing and international manufacturing. For example, LG is the only company that manufactures OLED displays, allowing them to have control of the market, producing them for other big brands and helping to keep the pricing at an all-time low, giving them an advantage with their own smart TVs.
The pandemic effect. Like the rest of the world, the Covid 19 pandemic dramatically impacted the sale of TVs. With everyone at home for long periods and the financial implications not having such an immediate effect, the sale of TVs received a surge. There was little to do as consumers stayed home, so upgrading their TVs became necessary. Even those who could work remotely took advantage and purchased them as a cheaper option for extra screens for their home office. Manufacturers met this surge in demand, and once they could reproduce again, they continued to produce new devices. Now that the height of the pandemic is in the rear-view mirror, the demand for new devices has dropped, leaving a surplus of stock no longer needed from those who upgraded in the lockdowns.
Recycling schemes. Many big brands, such as Samsung, offer a recycling option to discard an old device when receiving a new one. These devices are stripped down of their functional components, which can then be developed into newer appliances, keeping the costs of materials down whilst also helping the environment and preventing electronic waste from ending in landfills.
We are unsure if this market-wide low price is here to stay, but what we know is if you are looking for a new TV, now is the best time to pick up a bargain!
