My Cart - Smart phones, tablet PCs and other gadgets are drastically changing the way the nation watches TV. While this is not really news, as nearly everyone is participating in the change, the extent may be surprising to some.
The media regulator Ofcom recently released a collection of statistics showing how reliant we are on gadgets and technology to view media rather than the traditional television set.
With smart phones alone, the increase of data usage downloaded to each device averages out at 424 megabytes of data each, which doesn’t include the data downloaded whilst in wireless networks at home, so the figure could be even higher. This figure is a rise of almost 60% from the same period last year, showing how well embraced the technology has been. This figure has bumped the UK ahead of Japan on the global rankings of mobile internet usage.
Much of this is used for social media such as Facebook and twitter (of course, we have our own accounts for Electronic World, which you can find here – Electronic World Facebook and Twitter), but there is a growing percentage of people watching television through services on mobiles, such as BBC iPlayer.
Following on with the gadgets, the ownership of iPad’s in the UK has reached 19%, meaning nearly one in five people own an iPad of some description. Again, with the ownership of such gadgets and free services or sign up television services been in wide use, does this mean that people are watching their televisions less in favour of handheld, on the move gadgets?
