The first regular broadcast channel with exclusively HD content was launched by the BBC back in 2006. Since then, the vast majority of TV channels now have a SD and a HD alternative. It’s easily possible to enjoy a full evenings TV viewing without straying away from HD channels.
If you haven’t experienced HD TV pictures you are missing out – literally. A HDTV can display around 5 times more detail than its standard definition counterpart. Take a look at this video displaying side by side comparisons of SD and HD Television pictures (make sure you select the HD viewing option at the bottom of the video). There’s much more detail in the HD picture – and that’s only 720p – 1080p pictures are even better.
Once over, HD was only available to those paying subscriptions for their TV service via satellite or cable. Some of these providers now include HD for ‘free’ so long as you subscribe to their services. Now there is a third way – Enter freeview HD; this is an addition to the existing Freeview service. You can check the availability of Freeview HD in your area here.
To get Freeview HD, you’ll need a HDTV and a set top box that’s capable of outputting HD signals. Perhaps a better way, especially if you are upgrading your TV is to choose one with Freeview HD built in. Even if Freeview HD isn’t in your area yet, it soon will be; so why not enjoy all that glorious detail at no extra cost?
