At Electronic World we pride ourselves on being able to offer you the best deals on cheap TVs, stocking everything from LCD and LED sets to our 1080p and 4K range. The latter pairing have been the source of much debate on technological forums in recent times, with many questioning the value or worth of the extra cost attached to the 4K sets over the 1080p sets.
On Paper
On paper, the benefits of 4K technology outweighs the 1080p sets, with the 4K sets having four times the number of pixels than 1080p. As a result the overall image is considered to be crisper and able to display rounded edges more clearly, with the notion of having more pixels with which to work. Whilst, on the whole, this is true, the rarity of 4K media currently means that lower-resolution media is currently being upscaled. While this does mean that the image is better overall, it is not taking advantage of the vast number of extra pixels.
Upscaling
Upscaling occurs when trying to present lower-resolution material on a higher resolution set. This means that the television set in question alters the lower-resolution image to be spread across a greater number of pixels; the amount of information contained in the signal doesn’t alter so therefore no more detail will be present or displayed. Due to the current rarity of content for 4K sets, this is the process which is undertaken each time lower-resolution media is displayed on the television.
Native 4K vs Native 1080p
The difference between 4K and 1080p sets has seen 4K being branded as disappointing due to the fact that the upgrade between the two is not as vast as from Standard to High Definition. As we’ve discussed, the rarity of the 4K content means that a lot of the media viewed as 4K is actually lower-resolution media upscaled to Ultra High Definition. When the 4K content becomes more commonplace, consumers should be able to see the difference between even the upscaled UHD content and the potential of 4K technology.
Whilst the idea of having such detail to gaze upon in films or experience via your console is very exciting, one negative is the distance you need to be seated away from your set to experience the benefit. Any further than 2.5m away from a 60” screen and the difference between 1080p and 4K screens becomes minimal. However, this criticism could be construed as a little nit-picky as the image being displayed is still of superior quality – you would just need to sit closer. Come on forums; cheer up!
