For years people without a TV licence have been able to watch BBC iPlayer from their laptops; the platform has been exploited by many using this method and has been frustrating for the BBC to deal with. But, they have recently announced that this loophole will shortly come to a close.
No date was given for this closure, but that it would occur as soon as possible and that the BBC was happy to finally come to an agreement with the government over the issue. Video on demand did not exist when the legislation was first put into place, so it seems that an update to terms of the licence has been long overdue as a result of the changing ways that people have begun to watch TV.
It may begin to feel, as you type in your password to access the BBC iPlayer catch up service, that you have just added another subscription to your life. How different will this change be from Netflix after all? A lump sum payment once a year in lieu of a monthly subscription for your ‘licence’ seems only different in the frequency of the payments and not the services provided.
