From the moment Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity, we have come a long way to be able to watch full HD, and even 3D moving images. Over many, many years, technology has progressed to another level and advanced to a position where we never even imagined to be.
There is an argument to where the first ever film came from; but through recent discovery, light was brought onto the fact that it came to life in 16 frames per second in Leeds in 1888. From the 16 frames of black and white footage to 60 frames, 2160p, full RGB colour digital film; we have certainly progressed in the world of TV.
The Birth of Television
The first television was able to be bought for home viewing in 1946. This was the first mass produced electronic TV, and was certainly a big deal for families around the world. In the UK, 15,000 households had a television set by 1947 and by the late 60’s the wonder of colour TV came into use. By 1969, BBC1, BBC2, and ITV were regularly broadcasting in colour. Being able to sit with your family, a cup of tea, and a Sunday roast while watching the world go by in digital was the beginning of the tradition of TV in the British home.
The First LED TV
The transition of changes in TV was dramatically seen as we moved through time. Everyday technology was advancing but, when the first flat panel display monitor was released onto store shelves, the old sets were out the window. These TVs have changed the quality of the picture we see, and also the style of how it looks. Our homes have a thin as paper screen on the table, and even on the walls of our living rooms. These video displays use an array of light emitting diodes, as pixels, which allows for outdoor use, billboards, signs and even use on public transport. Who knew we were going to live in a world where we can see moving images on a bus?
Phones are Becoming Smarter Than TVs
From the Nokia 3310 with our overplaying of Snake, to Siri or Cortana constantly in our pockets, the progression in phones has dramatically changed the way we watch TV. Netflix in your bag and Amazon on the go, we can now watch what we want when we want, and with wi-fi hotspots pretty much everywhere we go, or all-you-can-eat data, it’s easier than ever to watch your favourite shows.
Smart TVs
We aren’t controlled by the TV – we are more in control than ever. With what seems like unlimited apps, we can pick and choose what we want and when we watch it. There is no need to schedule your day around that 7.30pm showing of Coronation Street, when you can watch it a day later or a week later at whatever time suits you. We have certainly come an extremely long way from the restricted three channels to an endless supply of them.
The year 2017 consists of much remarkable technology, but nothing like the gift of TV we have at our disposal. 3D TVs, 4K visuals, and from VHS to Blu-ray, the dramatic advancement in such a small amount of time is impressive. We live in a society which is technology driven and we are always eager to keep up to date on new devices, apps, and tech know-how. The way we watch moving images has stepped up its game from the 1940s, and we have moved from having to watch one of three channels on a TV the size of a suitcase to a paper thin Smart TV. Whatever next?
