There’s been two Assassin’s Creed games released this week – part of what’s now an annual tradition of getting them out for the Christmas rush. But developers Ubisoft are far from alone in creating a memorable series. Let’s take a look at some of the best, starting with, well…
Assassin’s Creed
Free-running, time-hopping, stealth-killing. Assassin’s Creed has it all. The games have some incredible visuals and a fairly good series. But the real fun is being about to climb walls and jump rooftops in a desperate bid to get away from the scene of your silent kill. The multiplayer is pretty unique, and plays out more like a virtual game of hide and seek; far quieter and more clinical than the usual high-octane speed-murder craze of other online titles. And say what you want about some of the lesser titles in the series, there’s no other game that does what Assassin’s Creed does.
Super Mario Bros. (And Pretty Much Every Other Mario Game)
There’s no denying it: Nintendo revolutionised gaming. And they did it with a little help from a plumber from Brooklyn. The Mario games are always excellent and well-executed. Ok, generally they’re awesomely conceived 2D platformers, although he has branched out into role-playing games, 3D platformers, fighting games and, of course, Mario Kart. Pretty good going for a guy we never actually see plumbing.
Grand Theft Auto
From the early top-down days to the technically genius 3D open-world of Grand Theft Auto III, right up to the wickedly satirical storytelling of GTA: San Andreas and GTAV, the series only seems to get better as it rolls on. Sure, the Grand Theft Auto series is always the one people point to when talking about video game violence. And man is it violence – if the player chooses to be. That’s the true genius of GTA. Unlike other games, it’s not prescriptive. It’s all about freedom! Players are free to run, gun and race the way they please.
Call of Duty
Love it or hate it, there’s no avoiding the best-selling Call of Duty franchise. From its Hollywood blockbuster-style single player missions, to its incredibly well-thought out multiplayer, CoD changed the first-person shooter. Starting off with a series of Second World War games, they’ve since let players take part in the Vietnam War, and shown them a glimpse of a combat-fuelled future. It’s addictive and fun. Right up until some camper snipes you from across the map.
