Brothers in Arms: The Best Series in Video Games (Part Three)

Last week Mass Effect developers BioWare unveiled the latest edition of their Dragon Age series – Dragon Age: Inquisition. With that in mind, we’re going to look at some of the best role-playing game series’. In fact, there’s been so many in the RPG genre that it’d take a dragon’s age to compile them all. But let’s start with, obviously…

Dragon Age

Dragon Age is a relatively new IP in the game world. There’s only been three in the series, Origins, II, and Inquisition. Whilst gamers loved the original, the second game wasn’t so well received; in an attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominator, the casual gamer, it was streamlined to the point where it was just G without the RP, and hey, turns out role-players don’t want simplified combat, crafting and story. The third in the saga, on the other hand, seems to have redeemed the series. Go play!

The Elder Scrolls

For 20 years The Elder Scrolls have dominated the RPG landscape, with a massive, immersive world – an empire, actually – well-written characters, and epic story-telling. Fans have sunk countless hours into the five games released so far, literally hundreds of hours per game. So it’s interesting to note that The Elder Scrolls originally began life as simply a medieval gladiator game before developing into the action-packed role-player we know and love.

Final Fantasy

For some reason, whereas the West prefer real-time gaming, the Japanese often seem to favour turn-based gaming. And the king of the turn-based RPGs is Final Fantasy. The stories often seem like nonsense, with the usual . But with levelling up, dungeon-crawling, various classes – the warrior, the mage and so on – and, in later games in the series, an emotional attachment to characters. The Cloud/Aerith saga in Final Fantasy 7 will have any kid who grew up in the 90’s weeping, even today.
