And so it starts. Ok, the decorations seem like they’ve have been a permanent street fixture since 1986, and those sweet little biscuit tins and selection boxes have been sitting on supermarket shelves since about June, but now the war is heating up – literally.
For some, Christmas advert-spotting has become a modern-day tradition; there are some who’ll even claim that it’s not Christmas until they see the Coca-Cola Crimbo ad, with its soft-lighting, red and white trucks, and familiar jingle of ‘Holidays are a-comin’’.
Watching those extra-special TV shows and films have been a staple for years. Morecambe and Wise, The Sound of Music, Dirty Den divorcing Angie in EastEnders – ah, the spirit of Christmas right there. Crack out the Monopoly board and let’s really see it kick-off, ya cowards.
But now, with the rise of the supermarkets, it seems Christmas commercials are also on the television agenda, with social media and newspapers alike going crazy for the apparently must-watch event of the season. Last year’s John Lewis’ Christmas ad was a saccharine-sweet Disney-fied story of a bear and a hare – y’know, just like in real life. No products shown, just a short feel-good film. And hey, you can get that feeling just mooching around John Lewis too…
This year Sainsbury’s is setting the internet abuzz, with some reckoning that they’ve already ‘won’ the Christmas ad war. Was there ever actually a war? Who declared war on whom? Do any of us really care? Well, in keeping with that theme of war, Sainsbury’s have decided to commemorate the fallen of WWI and the legendary Christmas Truce game of football. It’s a three-minute movie which has all the themes of contemporary Christmas – love, sharing, friendship. Oh, and a bar of chocolate, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. Shrewd marketing or a supermarket paying it forward?
