As the days tick by and it gets ever closer to Christmas, it’s time to start planning your festive viewing. While the exact times and dates are yet to be revealed, our favourite broadcasters have already revealed the stars of their Christmas and New Year schedules, so here’s some of the highlights to look forward to.
Sky
Sky 1 offers swashbuckling drama with Moonfleet, an 18th century tale starring Ray Winstone and adapted by Ashley Pharoah, writer of the acclaimed Life on Mars.
In David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum the nation’s most beloved broadcaster takes us on a guided tour through the famous museum, bringing some of the long-extinct inhabitants back to life on screen through the use of modern technology. It’s also offered in 3D, providing an excellent reason to upgrade to a cheap 3D TV.
BBC
Following the record breaking 50th anniversary special, Doctor Who will return to television screens with The Time Of The Doctor – marking Matt Smith’s departure from the role and Peter Capaldi’s introduction.
Perhaps even more eagerly anticipated, Sherlock will finally be returning almost two whole years after audiences were stunned by The Reichenbach Fall, the dramatic finale to series two. It’s rumoured to be scheduled on New Year’s Day, finally bringing an answer to the question – how did Sherlock survive the fall?
Finally, bringing an old favourite back after an even longer absence, Still Open All Hours is a one-off special of the classic sitcom Open All Hours which sees the return of David Jason as the put-upon Granville, now running the shop in his own right having inherited it from old Arkwright (the late Ronnie Barker).
The BBC’s full festive schedule, with times and dates, is expected to be released on the 4th December.
ITV
Of course, the highlight of the ITV festive schedule has to be the two hour special of Downton Abbey – even though the episode isn’t set during the festive period, it’s sure to draw the viewers in.
The charity Text Santa Appeal is also high on the list, with an all-star broadcast on the 20th December to raise money for good causes.
Channel 4
A special instalment of Educating Yorkshire, possibly the most heart warming series of the year, will allow viewers to catch up with the pupils and teachers, as well as looking back on the year’s highlights.
