At a London ceremony last night, the British Academy Game Awards were announced – and many were surprised when first person shooter Destiny took the award for Best Game.
Developed by Bungie, the creators of the highly successful Halo franchise, Destiny is a post-apocalyptic science fiction shooter game which incorporates aspects of MMO and RPG games, and although it was a highly anticipated release, it was met with mixed reviews. Gamers criticised the weak story, shallow plot, uninspired locations, and the lack of a cohesive communications structure between players. However, it is graphically a very attractive game, with plenty of exciting action.
Destiny’s win is all the more surprising when you look at some of the other nominees.
Alien Isolation
Alien Isolation was considered to be one of the frontrunners for the award; it gained an overall positive reception from players and critics alike, and had already reaped a number of awards and featured highly in top games lists. Evoking perfectly the tension of the original Alien film, its innovative AI ensures that the player never feels safe and sets a new standard in horror gaming.
Dragon Age Inquisition
The third game of the Dragon Age franchise from Bioware had also already received high praise and an impressive array of awards. Whereas Destiny and Alien Isolation are both relatively short in terms of gameplay, Inquisition offers well over a hundred hours of gameplay, with thoroughly detailed landscapes, well-rounded characters and a gripping story.
Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor
Another critically acclaimed release, set in the Middle Earth created by J.R.R. Tolkein and set between the events of The Hobbit and those of The Lord of the Rings. Its Nemesis system was its biggest innovation, creating a unique experience for each playthrough.
Monument Valley
An enchanting puzzle game developed for the iPhone and later ported to Android smartphones.
Mario Kart 8
A game that really needs little introduction – like the previous seven games, you get to join Mario and friends to race karts on a variety of fun tracks.
