Television company Samsung have released new television sets featuring ‘Dual View’ Technology, where people can watch two separate channels or streams of vision and audio from the same set.
The technology involves the use of active shutter glasses, like the ones used with 3D sets, with personal headphones in order to get the specific channel and audio. Two 60 frame per second are displayed simultaneously, with the glasses actively filtering out one of them so the user just sees his or her stream. This is done by utilizing 120 Hz refresh speeds, allowing people to still view in full HD on either channel.
The technology available on a range on soon to be released Samsung TVs going up to a massive 55” set. Whilst ‘Dual View’ has been used on Sony televisions before, the technology was only utilized for gaming, not for regular viewing.
Dubbed already by some as a ‘marriage saver’, the technology looks impressive and flashy, but there are some worries over utilization in the future. The fact that people watch and hear different channels does isolate people somewhat, stopping conversations whilst viewing or talking about a show. However, it does create opportunities in different fields, such as marketing or if it can be used in connection with internet televisions to create different functions out of one set.
With most emergent technology, the mark of success is often how it is utilized and marketed, rather than actual usefulness, so ‘Dual View’ technology could be the next HD or the next laser disc.
