With previews of upcoming games, announcements of new titles and a look at what the future of gaming might hold, the E3 expo taking place right now has the eyes of video game aficionados firmly pinned on Los Angeles.
So far, it seems that games are going really big; big monsters, big worlds, and big titles. Many of the games we’re seeing in E3 presentations are new titles in existing popular franchises, promising more than their predecessors. For example, Assassin’s Creed Unity promises team co-op play, and Dragon Age Inquisition promises a much more open world feeling than its predecessors, as well as a balance between the tactical gameplay of the first game (Dragon Age: Origins) and the more action-oriented feeling of the sequel. EA Games, makers of the Dragon Age franchise, also offered teasers for the next Mass Effect game, The Sims 4, Star Wars Battlefront, a host of sports titles and an as-yet unidentified new franchise – and all this from just one of the games companies presenting at E3 this year.
One of the biggest talking points this year is “next generation” gaming – as promised by the Xbox One and the PS4. Although the new consoles came out last year, there still aren’t many games designed specifically for them. Right now, the games we’re playing are largely those which were designed for the current generation of platforms, and ported over to the new ones. This means that the power of these consoles is as yet largely unseen.
However, E3 is giving us glimpses of next generation games, coming next year – Dying Light, The Division, Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, the afore-mentioned Assassin’s Creed Unity and more – these games are designed specifically for the new generation of gaming consoles and will use their graphics capability to their fullest. A lot of the gameplay footage and trailers that we’re seeing have been highly impressive – enough to tempt many a gamer to invest in a next-gen console if they haven’t already done so.
Of course, to enjoy those graphics properly, you’ll need a good TV too – so while PC gamers are scrambling to upgrade video cards, memory capacity, graphics drivers and assorted other parts of their rig for these new games, console gamers can pick up one of our cheap Samsung TVs and get a fantastic high definition screen with one affordable purchase.
