It doesn’t seem like all that long since we were looking at last year’s film and TV award nominations, but the road to the Oscars is underway once again, and that means one thing; next stop, the Baftas! It’s a star-studded line-up this year, with plenty of standout films and actors all being honoured, but here’s a brief (although by no means comprehensive) overview of some of the key battlegrounds…
Best Film
The award for best film is always guaranteed to be one of the focal points at the Baftas, and this year it looks set to be hotly contested. With British interests ably present in the form of the highly rated Imitation Game and the hugely successful Theory of Everything, don’t get so carried away that you forget the other contenders. The Grand Budapest Hotel has received more Bafta nominations than any other film, and whatever you do don’t discount Boyhood. This coming-of-age drama took 12 years of filming that followed the real life growth of the title star, so it should take some beating.
Best Actor
Despite the presence of Ralph Fiennes, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Keaton in this category, it’s fair to say that a lot of the publicity thus far has focused upon Brits Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch going head to head. A so-called ‘rivalry’ has been downplayed, but the stakes are still pretty high for both of these popular men. Redmayne’s breathtaking portrayal of Stephen Hawking came out on top at the Golden Globes, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can back up this success.
Best Actress
Looking back to the Golden Globes, it was Julianne Moore who ascended to the heights in this category, turning plenty of heads for her role in Still Alice. Can she do it again at the Baftas? Rosamund Pike will certainly be hoping for success, given the acclaim she received for her starring role in psychological thriller Gone Girl, and Amy Adams also returns to the circles of Bafta nominees. In short, we have absolutely no idea who’s going to win, but hey, that’s why we’ll be sure to tune in.
The whole point of the Baftas is to celebrate great acting talent and some truly outstanding TV and film productions, but to enjoy any of these celebrated viewing experiences properly you’ll need a good TV. At Electronic World, we provide top quality televisions, but we also make sure all these premier models are cheap TVs too, as this way you get affordability and quality in one package.
